Position Description Summary:

APT Research is hiring a Part-Time, Pressure- Vessel System Engineer to support the NASA KSC S&MA Pressure Systems Manager in Institutional Safety on the KSC Safety and Mission Assurance Support Services (SMASS IV) contract at Kennedy Space Center, FL. This person will provide engineering expertise for KSC NASA Institutional Safety division.

Responsibilities: Specific tasks may include but are not limited to:

  • Assess PVS designs and remaining life analyses by evaluating the systems planned

  • Use potential damage mechanisms, and inspection plans to assure system integrity and reliability for the lifetime of the PVS.

  • Perform surveillance of PVS to verify compliance against NASA PVS requirements.

  • Review flight PVS, composite overwrap pressure vessel qualification packages, and blast and fragmentation analyses to assure personnel safety during ground processing of flight PVS.

  • Provide recommendations for improvements, corrections, and other issues with regard to compliance with NASA-STD-8719.17, NASA Standard for Ground-Based Pressure Vessels and Pressurized Systems.

  • Participate in several weekly PVS Design Reviews and facility modification planning to ensure compliance with requirements of NASA, OSHA, ASME, National Board, and other consensus standards organizations.

  • Artemis campaign mobile launcher #2 design reviews, construction submittals, and PVS certification.

  • Review design and procurement specifications for compliance with NASA-STD-8719.17 and industry standards.

  • Conduct walk-downs of active PVS and make recommendations to PSM to address real-time issues as they arise.

    Required Experience/Education:

  • ยท Education: BS Engineering or Technical degree (mechanical/ aerospace or materials engineering)

  • Experience: Minimum 6 years of specific engineering experience with Pressure vessels and Pressurized systems

    Security Clearance Requirement:

  • Must be able to qualify for an unescorted badge (US Citizen required) and be able to pass a background investigation and drug test.

    Preferred Experience/ skills:

  • Specific engineering experience with Pressure Vessels and Pressurized Systems

  • Knowledge of ASME standards or NASA PVS requirements

  • In depth knowledge of the following concepts (actual experience is a plus):

  • Fracture Mechanics

  • Quantitative Hazard Analysis

  • Systems Safety Engineering

  • Non-Destructive Examination Techniques (e.g., UTT - Ultrasonic Thickness Testing, PT - Penetrant Testing, AE- Acoustic Emission, UE- Ultrasonic Examination, RT - Radiographic Testing, MT- Magnetic particle Testing, EC- Eddy Current, etc.)

  • NASA-STD-8719.17 Rev A NASA Requirements for Ground-Based Pressure Vessels and Pressurized Systems

    Essential Job Functions:

    Work Environment:

  • Office environment; Flight hardware processing, facility systems and Ground support Testing Facilities

  • Flexible schedule with hybrid onsite and remote schedule. Shift and/or weekend work occasionally required,

  • Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate, and timely communication, both verbally and written

  • Ability to interact professionally with coworkers, management, and customers

    Travel Requirements:

  • Requires ability to travel domestically (within the U.S.) <10%

    Physical Requirements:

  • Requires sitting for extended periods of time at a workstation / desk

  • Ability to climb stairs

  • Ability to lift >15 lbs.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgement
