Hamilton College Director of Campus Safety in Clinton, New York

The Director of Campus Safety is a dynamic leader responsible for the overall management and direction of the Department of Campus Safety. This includes overseeing campus patrol, crime prevention, facilities security, traffic and parking enforcement, crowd control, investigations, student transportation, and participation on the College’s emergency management team. As a key member of the Student Life Division, the Director collaborates with various departments across the College to ensure a safe and secure campus environment. The director is expected to develop and maintain collaborative relationships with external law enforcement and emergency response agencies.

This is an exempt position with a pay range of $95,000 - $115,000.

Responsibilities

Leadership & Management

  • Develop a comprehensive staffing plan that meets the unique needs of the campus community.

  • Create and maintain a training and policy manual that provides clear guidance for Campus Safety personnel.

  • Recruit, train, evaluate, and mentor all Campus Safety personnel to ensure a high level of professionalism, effectiveness, and ongoing development.

  • Conduct regular performance evaluations, providing constructive feedback and identifying opportunities for growth.

  • Foster a positive and inclusive work environment that promotes teamwork, collaboration, and high morale.

  • Conduct an annual review of department policies, procedures, and programs to maintain alignment with best practices and evolving needs.

Campus Safety & Security

  • Enforce College policy and collaborate with the College conduct coordinator on investigations involving student infractions.

  • Ensure compliance with all relevant federal and state regulations, including the Clery Act, Campus Security Act, and others.

  • Develop and implement educational programs to promote personal safety, fire safety, and crime awareness among the campus community.

  • Establish clear department policies and operational protocols for routine and emergency procedures, including power outages, medical emergencies, and campus crimes.

  • Organize and coordinate Campus Safety coverage for special events such as athletic events, Reunions, Orientation, Commencement, and more.

  • Investigate criminal activity by outside perpetrators and promptly notify the community of any safety or security concerns.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Plan and manage the department budget, including evaluating equipment needs and recommending purchases.

  • Serve as the College liaison with local law enforcement and emergency response.

  • Supervise campus parking, including issuing permits, enforcing regulations, issuing tickets for violations, and overseeing the campus parking ticket appeal committee.

  • Oversee college switchboard personnel and operations.

  • Ensure regular maintenance monitoring for College buildings and grounds, including boilers, sprinkler systems, lighting, and more.

  • Complete additional assignments as requested by the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs.

Relationships

The Director of Campus Safety will:

  • Actively participate in meetings and professional development programs campus wide and within the Division of Student Life.

  • Meet regularly with the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs.

  • Collaborate closely with the Directors of Facilities Management and Community Living on facility safety and security matters.

  • Work in partnership with the Director of Student Health Services and HCEMS on medical emergencies.

  • Maintain strong relationships with local, state, and national campus law enforcement organizations

  • Establish and lead a campus safety advisory committee.

  • Bachelor’s degree with seven or more years of related experience, preferably in Campus Safety/Campus Police and in patrol and criminal investigation is strongly preferred

  • A broad knowledge of federal, state and local laws

  • Completion of NIMS training and experience in emergency management is required.
