Case Western Reserve University Senior Director of Technology Transfer Operations in Cleveland, Ohio

POSITION OBJECTIVE 

Working independently, the Senior Director of Operations is part of the senior research and technology management staff. In partnership with the Executive Director for Technology Transfer, the senior director will be responsible for: operational functions and performance including direct management of the administrative staff; identification and execution of operational strategic initiatives; and directing all compliance matters, internal and external, including federal, state, non-profit, and industrial obligations tied to intellectual property. The senior director is expected to maintain and continually seek to improve the commercialization operations of the technology transfer office, including implementation of sound compliance management and financial decisions.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Advance the university's research commercialization goals through integration of the TTO's investment portfolio tracking with that of the Council to Advance Human Health, the Case-Coulter Translational Research Program, the CWRU Technology Validation Fund, and the Spartan Fund (formerly Case Technology Ventures) . Work closely with industry partners and internal stakeholders to identify, develop, implement strategic operational initiatives to enhance service to faculty and staff and to improve CWRU's relationships with industry. Design and run campus educational events directed at faculty, student, and staff training and education on technology commercialization, including small business innovation research/small business technology transfer workshops in partnership with the Veale Institute. Actively participate in the Association of University Technology Managers to bring best practices to Case Western Reserve University with respect to financial, legal, and export control risk mitigation, including but not limited to drafting, with oversight from the Office for General Counsel, new legal language for university licensing templates. Manage the licensing team's adherence to operational protocols related to commercialization of technologies. Ensure that best intellectual property management and commercialization practices are maintained/executed, including but not limited to expenditure justifications, government and other sponsor compliance, communications with faculty and management, and legal and financial database management (named ¿Wellspring Sophia¿). Manage and counsel the licensing professionals on data input, asset management, etc. Define and evaluate strategic alternatives through the development of financial models and reports, providing recommendations as needed. Provide high level leadership and direction to the Executive Director both internally and externally. Design and execute processes directed at the coordination of CWRU¿s three affiliation agreements with area hospitals. Manage potential conflicts and ambiguities by anticipating these and designing protocols to accurately account for CWRU¿s obligations under each agreement. Oversee, via supervision of the technology transfer office contract and compliance manager, adherence to federal reporting obligations and guidelines of the Bayh-Dole act, including oversight of the technology transfer office's use of the iEdison reporting system, and manual reporting to non-participant funding agencies. Manage the workflow to ensure. Serve as the technology transfer office's liaison to the university¿ Export Control Officer and design protocols and processes in conjunction with the Export Control Officer to maintain the university's compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.
