The Sherwin-Williams Company R&D- Scientist in Cleveland, Ohio

This R&D Scientist role supports Sherwin-Williams' external innovation and technology scouting efforts in our Global Innovation Scouting Team (GIST). GIST is responsible for delivering new, impactful innovations that address the technical needs of Sherwin-Williams by looking outside typical vendor channels such as startups, universities, and companies selling into adjacent industries. The R&D Scientist will seek to understand internal partner's needs, scout for external innovations to address those needs, nurture the transfer of those new innovations into Sherwin-Williams, and periodically execute laboratory work to demonstrate feasibility of those new innovations for Sherwin-Williams. Frequent and direct interaction with cross-divisional marketing and product development teams, as well as external scouting partners, is required to ensure the successful identification, assessment, and transfer of technologies. Job duties include contact with other employees and access confidential and proprietary information and/or other items of value, and such access may be supervised or unsupervised. Solve complex technical problems by applying new, external innovations into a diverse set of SW products and processes. Partner with internal project teams across all Sherwin-Williams innovation labs, product development teams, and technology scouts to learn about their current and future innovation needs. Communicate innovation needs to external scouting partners to help them identify high value leads. Assess and select leads to present to internal partners. Support the transition of external innovation leads into development projects within various business units. Execute proof-of-concept laboratory projects to evaluate new material innovations. Such projects require individual project planning, status updates, and closing reports. Design and execute experiments to ascertain the value of such materials in a coating system. Collaborate with the legal team to create confidentiality, consulting, and material transfer agreements. Proactively and continually learn about and solve new challenges and problems. Communicate in a clear, concise, and professional manner to product development and marketing teams across all business units. Participate in tracking a portfolio of open engagements with external partners. Host and manage vendors and partners. BASIC QUALIFICATIONS Must be legally authorized to work in the country for which you are applying for employment (without now or in the future needing sponsorship for employment work visa and/or permanent residence status). Bachelor's degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math field. Eight years of relevant experience with coatings (or related) formulation and performance testing. Broad understanding of scientific and engineering principles. Ability to quickly learn about new internal and external technologies including materials, software, and equipment. Excellent organizational and time management skills Proven problem-solving and decision-making ability. Driven, independent project management style. Strong communication skills (written and verbal) Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to quickly engage and build trust with new teams. Ability to interact effectively with all levels of technical and managerial experience. Basic knowledge of statistics and data analysis PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor's degree in chemistry, materials science, or polymer science.
