CORE RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS: (1) Effectively handles assigned legal activities for business units, functions or legal practice areas: Manages claims and litigation - Manages company disputes, including case reviews, fact-finding and analysis, e-discovery, witness preparation, depositions, case management conferences, motion practice, and arbitration or trial preparation and presentation. Works with insurance representatives and carriers, as applicable. Supports projects and teams - Supports or leads projects and teams providing legal support and solutions to the company's business units or corporate departments. Collaborates to develop strategy. Provides advice - Provides focused and practical legal advice respecting business operations as well as the impact of current or anticipated laws, rules, and regulations. Advises on legal matters and provides guidance on potential outcomes. Substantiates positions - Researches, develops, and coordinates implementation of legal solutions. Mitigates risk - Identifies and analyzes existing and emerging legal risks. Develops and implements business-focused strategies to manage risks. Proactive guidance - Stays abreast of new regulations and emerging legal risks; provides proactive advice and counsel to business units and corporate functions that may be impacted. (2) Demonstrates the development of core legal expertise and support for legal affairs of business units or enterprise-wide functions: Develops understanding of the operational model by which the supported business unit or enterprise-wide function operates. Supports clients on a cost-effective basis. Manages outside counsel in an efficient and cost-effective manner, as necessary. (3) Primary Business Partner Engagement: Engages, communicates with, and advises mid-management and operational business clients. Develops understanding of how legal support affects objectives, risks, and returns of business clients. (4) Supervisory Responsibility: May manage or provide work direction or review the work of individual contributor (IC) level support staff (paralegals, admins, fellows, law clerks, etc.). FORMAL EDUCATION: Required: Juris Doctor License to practice law required (applicable jurisdiction) KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE: Required: 2 years of post-licensure experience in civil litigation, insurance defense, or claims management. Strong work ethic combined with diligence and the ability to act independently and adapt to changing priorities and able to work as part of a cohesive team. Proven judgment and ability to evaluate and manage risk and capable of inspiring trust and confidence of clients. Demonstrated experience clearly articulating complex legal concepts to a lay audience. Preferred: Prior federal or state clerkship experience. 5+ years of post-licensure experience in civil litigation, insurance defense, or claims management. Demonstrated experience as an in-house attorney providing guidance and counseling to business, particularly in connection with litigation or pre-suit disputes. Experience training company personnel on substantive legal topics.
