Cleveland Clinic Infection Preventionist in Cleveland, Ohio

As an Infection Preventionist, you will work in a direct patient facing environment where you will implement, promote, and maintain an active infection prevention program through surveillance, investigative activities, consultation, education, policy development and research. This position offers a variety of day-to-day duties and while you will not be involved in direct patient care, you will still be in contact with others providing informal and formal education, evaluating processes, environment of care and isolation, and conducting surveillance via computers.

The ideal future caregiver is someone who:

  • Has at least three years of relevant clinical experience or is CBIC certified with two years of related clinical experience.

  • Has basic knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other related programs.

  • Demonstrates effective communication, clinical assessment, and computer skills.

  • Excels in a fast-paced environment.

Even without experience, caregivers will be oriented and trained beyond the 90-day orientation period preparing you for success in this role. This team encourages its caregivers to become involved in the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) after their probation period and participate in external groups, many of which are free of charge. After two years of experience, the caregiver in this role is expected to sit for the CIC examination.

Responsibilities:

  • Conducts surveillance for hospital acquired infections; analyzes data. Generates reports, identifies trends.

  • Provides recommendations for improvement.

  • Investigates clusters of infections, outbreaks.

  • Utilizes knowledge of microbiology, cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization of patient care equipment.

  • Develops and implements infection prevention policies and procedures.

  • Conducts audits on infection prevention practices.

  • Provides education and serves as a consultant to various levels of care providers.

  • Coordinates infection prevention committee meetings and other related activities.

  • Coordinates the annual infection prevention risk assessment, review, and evaluation of the organization's infection prevention plan. Reports communicable diseases as required by the Ohio Department of Health.

  • Collaborates with health departments in complying with issues related to outbreaks and control of communicable diseases.

  • Complies with mandates for state and federal public reporting of hospital acquired infections.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree required.

  • RN preferred.

Certifications:

  • Certified in Infection Control - Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology, Inc.

  • CBIC required after two years of hire date.

  • CBIC Certification will offset one year of required experience.

Work Experience:

  • Minimum three years of recent relevant clinical experience including nursing, infection prevention, respiratory therapy, or medical technology.

  • Strong communication, clinical assessment, and computer skills (i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other related programs).

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required for procedures.
