Howmet Aerospace Global Continuous Improvement Manager in Cleveland, Ohio

Major Activities and Key Challenges Include:

  • Define activities that require engineered solutions resulting in reduced waste, improved quality, improved throughput, increased machine/person ratio, improved safety, and improved business unit DVP%.

  • Lead and collaborate with cross functional internal teams focused on shop floor factory improvements, which could include CAPEX.

  • Facilitates, reviews and aids locations in developing Hoshin plans.

  • Standardize process and document for repeatability, train and certify operators.

  • Understand and analyze Profit and Loss (P&L) statements to identify opportunities for cost reduction, revenue enhancement, and margin improvement.

  • Analyze existing processes and identify areas for improvement through data-driven methods such as Lean Six Sigma principles, root cause analysis, and statistical tools.

  • Act as internal consultant and catalyst to assist plant leadership, individuals, and teams in the application of continuous improvement principles and techniques to improve operations.

  • Drive consistent, uniform approaches for visual controls and productivity measurements to be utilized throughout production teams and the factory.

  • Facilitate successful Kaizen and rapid improvement process events with employees, customers and suppliers, with a major emphasis on locally focused improvement. Provide support for all follow-throughs required to sustain the improvements during the events.

  • Instruct and train others in continuous process improvements, including the use of various problem solving and productivity techniques such as process mapping and cost time management.

  • Provide formal training on lean manufacturing and continuous improvement concepts, principles, and practices. Utilize a learn-by-doing approach, supplementing classroom work with hands-on training

  • Assist team leaders in team skill and knowledge development to support meeting management goals, project management, improvements, results measurements, problem solving and related team skills.

  • Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) to track progress and measure the impact of improvement initiatives.

  • Drive change management efforts to ensure successful implementation and sustainability of process improvements.

  • Identify and share best practices, lessons learned, and success stories to promote knowledge sharing and continuous learning within the organization.

  • Stay updated on industry trends and emerging technologies related to continuous improvement methodologies.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate:

  • Willingness to “go see” and spend focused time on the shop floor to work alongside shop team to develop understanding and perspective.

  • Ability to train others in basic lean tools (TPM, Daily Management, problem solving, kaizen, Leader Standard work, etc.) and drive bottom line impact through their engagement.

  • Capable as an engineering resource to observe, identify problems, and improve the operation through various CI tools with a focus on data driven analysis and sound problem-solving techniques.

  • Good facilitation and training skills to deliver CI concepts, principles and practices.

  • Strong project management skills.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently, prioritizing and completing multiple work assignments in diverse fields with minimal direction.

  • Proficient in Excel, PowerPoint and other business software.

  • A working knowledge of manufacturing processes, process controls

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution

  • Minimum of 7 years’ experience in a manufacturing work environment

  • Continuous Improvement experience in a manufacturing environment

  • Thorough knowledge of lean manufacturing, productivity improvements, cost analysis, forecasting, capacity and rapid improvement techniques

  • Effective project management

  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills

  • Must be able to prepare and deliver effective presentations

  • Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

  • This position is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) which requires U.S. person status. ITAR defines U.S. person as an U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident (i.e. 'Green Card Holder'), Political Asylee, or Refugee. (IF NEEDED)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A technical and/or graduate degree is preferred

  • Experience leading kaizen and TPM events.

  • Highly structured and formal education and training in Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement

  • Demonstrated ability to lead diverse groups of managers and employees in driving change initiatives

  • Solid problem-solving skills and the ability to train and lead others (A3/5Why/Kaizen/Process Management/TPM, etc.)

  • Analytical skills/data mindset; ability to turn data into information, tell a story with data

  • Minimum of 5 years of in driving for results and or continuous improvement activities within a leadership capacity

  • Dynamic people skills, ability to interact with audiences at all levels within the organization

  • Continuous Improvement certification Level 2 or completion within 18 months of role
