Case Western Reserve University Electrochemical Materials Fabrication Center Managing Director in Cleveland, Ohio

POSITION OBJECTIVE 

Working with a high degree of independence and under general direction, the Electrochemical Materials Fabrication Center (EMF) Managing Director will direct the administrative, business and operational activities of the center. This will include leading the budgeting and forecasting processes, performing financial management, analysis, and reporting; and will ensure appropriate management of the associated major projects, including major awards, and industry-sponsored projects. The managing director acts as the point of contact for these major projects and activities. They will work closely with the Great Lakes Energy Institute Executive Director and the EMF Principal Investigator as well as internal and external investigators on these awards, including those in academia, industry, national laboratories and at government installations.

Case Western Reserve University's Great Lakes Energy Institute was created in 2008 to empower faculty, students, and partners to catalyze breakthroughs in energy sustainability that address the most pressing problems facing our world. Since the institute's inception, Case Western Reserve University has quintupled its level of energy-related research and has established credibility in attracting energy awards across funding agencies and with industry. Built on historical strengths in fundamentals ranging across the sciences, engineering, policy and business, university's energy research unites disciplines. Great Lakes Energy Institute's activities focuses on catalyzing growth in energy related research, technology commercialization, education, and outreach activities among the faculty and serves as the face for energy leadership at the university. The Electrochemical Materials Fabrication Lab was established in 2011, and has since performed groundbreaking work in electrochemical separations, electrowinning and electroplating of rare earth elements, and improvements in atomic layer electrochemical deposition. In 2022, the Electronics Design Center was brought under the leadership of the principal investigator. These additional administrative requirements, along with intended growth has led to the formation of the Electrochemical Materials Fabrication Center. The center Managing Director will work closely with the center principal investigator, Institute executive director, GLEI advisory board, GLEI staff and CWRU leadership to serve the mission and long-term sustainability of the Institute and EMF.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 

       Plan and direct primary research center operations. In close coordination with the Center PI, develop the annual plan for EMF Center resource development, to include responding to federal and state solicitations, business development, and philanthropic opportunities. Identify and engage with collaborators to form highly-competitive proposal teams led by the EMF Center. Mobilize resources to ensure the successful completion and submission of comprehensive, complete and winning proposals. Ensure the successful completion of research projects, to include directing post-award administration and follow-up with sponsors. Collaborate in school strategy discussions in conjunction with the Case School of Engineering Dean's office, including the associate dean for research, the associate dean for finance and administration and other leaders by developing and documenting financial assumptions for planning and forecasting for the center, as well as on its impact on the Great Lakes Energy Institute. Develop and maintain long-range financial planning models tailored to varying program assumptions to be used in executive decision-making. In conjunction with the Associate Dean for finance and administration and related direct reports, identify key financial tools required for business decision support.
