Northrop Grumman, Aeronautics Systems sector, has an opening for a Tooling Engineer Tool - Metrology Engineer Tool - Metrology, to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals. This position will be located in Clearfield, UT.
This position will be responsible for activities and knowledge within multiple disciplines across the Tooling/Manufacturing process.
Develops and evaluates metrology systems that measure characteristics of objects such as length and volume as relating to industrial metrology needed For Industrial Production and Process Control. Identifies magnitude of error sources contributing to uncertainty of results to determine reliability of measurement process in quantitative terms. Develops metrology methods and techniques based on principles of measurement science, technical analysis of measurement problems and accuracy and precision requirements. Will work alongside Metrology Manager to tackle initiatives and projects that ultimately shape the future of the department.

Essential Functions:
Maintain metrology recognition/accreditation
Perform technical assessments for personnel performance
Develop and lead technical audits of metrology (including suppliers) to verify traceability of standards and compliance with published standards and guidelines
Develop, document, and maintain procedures and best practices; based on principles of measurement science, technical analysis of measurement problems and accuracy and precision requirements
Develop, implement, and maintain everything relating to metrology per published standards and guidelines
Design and document measurement reference material for tool fixture building and manufacturing of products
Provide technical input to quotes and capital spending
Perform Equipment Performance Report evaluations and monthly audits
Perform and train in metrology principles as required
Assist in trouble shooting and root cause analysis of measurement issues or measurement system problems and advise project engineers in measurement techniques & equipment operation
Perform state-of-the-art or special measurement tasks
Evaluate and recommend M&TE for use in measurement applications
Evaluate supplier’s products and provide feedback; work with suppliers to resolve product issues and make improvement recommendations
Train technicians and engineers in metrology methodologies and measurement principles as it relates to aircraft manufacturing and tooling jig/fixture building
Perform uncertainty evaluation and analysis for measurement standards and associated measurement
Laser Tracking Interferometer or non-Interferometer Systems (FARO-LEICA-API).
Must be familiar with computer aided metrology systems such as Laser trackers, articulated arms, scanners, 6DoF (Six Degree of Freedom) etc. Experience with Hexagon equipment is preferred
Experience with inspection, maintenance/repair, testing and optical and mechanical alignment/adjustment of laser modules and laser tracking systems.
Experience with calibration/compensation of instrument to ensure quality measurements.
Experience with computer aided measurement software (CAMS) (Verisurf, SA and Polyworks).
Experience in data collection for the Validation/Verification of Tooling and Production Engineering. Coordination with Manufacturing. Engineering, Quality, and Tool Design to interpret, analyze, and advise on the data results.
Experience with assembly tooling and/or composite tooling.
The ability to set up reference systems, perform transformations and alignments using the least squares adjustment to give minimal error value(s) for key features as defined by the design requirements
Experience in Microsoft Office suite.
Ability to communicate/interface with multiple levels, such as Manufacturing Engineering, Quality Assurance, and Tool Design to interpret, analyze, and advise on the data results.
The ability to work on high ladders and portable platforms, ability to lift heavy objects over 35lbs., and the ability to stand for long periods of time is required.
Willing to travel 10% of time
This position may be filled as a Level 2 or Level 3 based on the qualifications outlined below.
Basic Qualifications Metrology Engineer 2 :
BS in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) discipline plus two (2) years of engineering/calibration experience OR MS in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) discipline plus zero (0) years of engineering/calibration experience
Process engineering experience
Familiarity with Design of Experiment (DOE), Statistical Process Control (SPC), 6 sigma concepts for process development and control
Knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
Fluency in MS Office software applications
This position requires the ability to travel up to 10% of the time.
Current US Secret Security Clearance (US Citizenship is required.)
Ability to obtain PAR

BS in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) discipline plus five (5) years of engineering/calibration experience OR MS in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) discipline plus three (3) years of engineering/calibration experience
Process engineering experience
Familiarity with Design of Experiment (DOE), Statistical Process Control (SPC), 6 sigma concepts for process development and control
Knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
Fluency in MS Office software applications
This position requires the ability to travel up to 10% of the time.
Current US Secret Security Clearance (US Citizenship is required.)

Preferred Qualifications Metrology Engineer 2/3:
STEM Degree (Science, Technical, Engineering or Mathematical)
Experience designing in 3D CAD e.g. CATIA, NX, CREO etc. Has a firm understanding of GD&T and tolerance stack-up
Experience managing projects (Cost, schedule and technical performance). Understanding of Coordination of design and fabrication requirements for tools and fixtures with customers, both internal and external.
Experience working hands-on in a production assembly line environment
Experience providing innovative techniques focused on improving product designs and tooling assemblies or equipment
Composite experience and process knowledge
Secret or Top Secret clearance preferred
Manufacturing/Assembly Tooling and/or composite Tooling Experience/Knowledge
Measurement Theory application and process in more than one discipline
Experience in reverse engineering and model building from collected data.
Knowledge of Theodolite systems, Photogrammetric laser radar systems, laser scanning systems and articulating arms.
Experience with one or more of the following disciplines: torque, torque transducers, temperature, humidity, pressure, vacuum, leak, sound, photonics, wind flow, mass, scales, force, accelerometers; verification and certification of ESD equipment and workstations; Dimensional: length, angles, flatness; Calibration principles and practice
Procedure writing, Data template creation, Researching project and technologies
Familiarity with CAD software (NX, AutoCAD, CATIA or similar)
Salary Range: $70,200 - $105,400
Salary Range 2: $86,600 - $130,000
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
