Summary: This position will require that the applicant possesses the clinical evaluation and educational skills expected of an athletic trainer working in a physician extender role. The athletic trainer is responsible for the following functions regarding athletic injuries prevention, assessment, treatment, and reconditioning as set forth by the NATA Board of certification. The athletic trainer will demonstrate proper taping, strapping, bracing, and fitting of athletic equipment. The athletic trainer will carry out all prescribed treatments and recommendations by the team/program/event physician. This position may work as an embedded member in a school where clinical supervision is limited. These duties are based on the needs of the school, its athletic programs, and UNCPN. The Athletic Director and/or Practice Manager, as necessary, shall modify duties. The athletic trainer will be present at home athletic contests and specific sport practices, including football and wrestling. The athletic trainer shall also attend all football games JV/Varsity home and away.:

Responsibilities:

  1. Establish an effective athletic training program for Clayton High School Athletics.

  2. Provide First Aid and injury assessment/treatment/rehabilitation/reconditioning for Clayton High School student-athletes. The athletic trainer will also be responsible for making appropriate physician referrals..

  3. Provide coverage at home events and specified practices from the beginning of summer sports workouts to the conclusion of the spring sports season.

  4. Coordinate the annual required athletic physicals and supervise the clearance of injured athletes prior to and during sports seasons.

  5. Maintain a line of communication with the team physician regarding athletic health care and recommended treatment/rehabilitation for all athletic injuries.

  6. Assist coaching staff in evaluating and implementing sport-specific conditioning programs and methods.

  7. Maintain an effective and efficient athletic training room.

  8. Maintain communication with parents on the care and treatment of their student athlete.

  9. File all necessary reports associated with athletic injuries and/or incidents.

  10. Maintain a daily treatment log.

  11. Oversee the ordering of supplies and equipment pertaining to the athletic training room and maintain an up-to-date inventory.

  12. Provide the Athletic Director with an annual budget for supplies and equipment.

  13. Assist in the selection and fitting of protective equipment, including special taping, pads, and braces.

  14. Create a safe playing environment by monitoring and controlling environmental risks.

  15. Share professional literature relative to athletic training to the school’s coaching staff.

  16. Casting and Patient Care- Casting patients, providing splints, braces, crutches and other DME and provide patient education for these items. Staple or suture removal, preparing injections, taking vital signs and stocking and cleaning rooms.

  17. Disability Cases- Answering patient clinical phone calls in a timely manner and completing disability paperwork.

  18. Patient Education- Educate patients on home exercise programs and therapeutic exercise. Communicates effectively with patients and staff members.

  19. Patient Information- Rooming and obtaining the necessary patient information to update the patient history and chart. Reviewing clinic schedules and charts to verify all of the appropriate test results or patient information related to the appointment have been received. Order appropriate x-ray, lab or other medical tests as indicated. Performance of a thorough medical history and appropriate physical examination on patients with appropriate documentation.

Education Requirements:

● Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate discipline.

Licensure/Certification Requirements:

● Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) certification

● Licensed as an Athletic Trainer by the North Carolina Board of Athletic Trainer Examiners or license eligible.

● BLS for healthcare providers.

Professional Experience Requirements:

● One (1) year of experience as an athletic trainer preferred.

Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements:

● Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the use of relevant medical terminology.
