Pickaway County Community Action Rural Outreach Specialist in Circleville, Ohio

Position Title: Rural Outreach Specialist Pay Grade: Based on experience Classification: Full-Time Reports To: Community Services Director Supervises: None Standard Work Day: Monday---Thursday 7:30a-4:30p FLSA: Non-Exempt

Job Summary: The Rural Outreach Specialist will be responsible for implementing and maintaining a rural street outreach program to individuals who are homeless, mentally ill, and/or co-occurring substance abuse. The Rural Outreach Specialist will advocate for these individuals by connecting them to the appropriate community resources, based on their needs, including behavior health services, housing, medical care, income and benefits support, and recovery support. Because homelessness is often less visible in rural areas, the Rural Outreach Specialist will be responsible for monitoring the streets, communicating with shelters, and pay close attention to individuals utilizing shared housing arrangements.

Required Qualifications:

  •  High-school diploma or equivalency
  •  Must meet local standards for Peer Specialist certification in the State of Ohio
  •  Valid Driver's License and the ability to be insured under agency policy
  •  Must be able to successfully complete a drug screen
  •  Must be able to successfully complete a criminal background check

Essential Functions:

  •  Conduct street outreach to assist homeless individuals.
  •  Establish a working relationship with homeless individuals in need of Mental Health Services, who may also need assistance and referrals regarding treatment of substance use disorder, housing opportunities, and benefits.
  •  Refer these clients to the appropriate organizations.
  •  Evidence of ability to work as a team with staff and volunteers.
  •  Evidence of ability to work independently. Quickly develops and maintains rapport with callers using active listening skills.
  •  Visit homeless shelters, such as the drop-in-centers, bus stations, dining halls, parks, and other areas where the homeless congregate.
  • Accompany homeless individuals to initial and scheduled appointments when appropriate, as well as coordinate follow-up care to meet the clients' needs.
  •  Participate in community awareness and outreach programs as assigned.
  •  Other duties as assigned
