In this vital role you will function as a core member of the new product development team. You will be responsible for working closely with design, quality, and manufacturing engineers, as well as suppliers throughout all phases of the product development lifecycle. Your role will be critical in influencing the design for manufacturing while developing and qualifying components, defining the assembly process, and transferring the product design to manufacturing. You will collaborate with internal team members and outside manufacturing partners to drive the development & qualification of the comprehensive manufacturing system.

What You’ll Do:

  • Select and work with suppliers across multiple components and differing technologies to finalize product design, materials, and mfg process.

  • Design, develop, and validate robust manufacturing and assembly processes that meet product quality, cost, and performance standards.

  • Create and implement strategies for component development/ qualification, assembly and mfg processes, packaging, and sterilization.

  • Provide project planning, design support, and process development knowledge, complete qualification, validation, and stabilization.

  • Resolve difficult engineering and manufacturing problems using advanced CAD techniques, prototyping, and other available technologies.

  • Responsible for development, bring up, testing, error proofing, and qualification of assembly line, manufacturing equipment, and tooling.

  • Perform component COGS assessments and seek opportunities to improve mfg processes and quality, increase capacity, and reduce scrap and costs.

  • Using suitable statistical methods, develop validation protocols, qualify first articles, complete process capability studies and process validations.

  • Perform process characterizations, DOE's, risk mitigations, and optimizations.

  • Document processes and equipment including but not limited to drawings, flow charts, specifications, FMEAs, control plans, routers, IQ/OQ/PQ

  • Collaborate with design team and participate in design reviews to provide inputs on design for manufacturing, assembly, and cost.

  • Collaborate with multifunctional partners to ensure DFM/A, appropriate component supplier and assembly site selection, and proper mfg transfer.

  • Assess and communicate project updates, risks, resource needs, and timelines to management.

  • Provide constructive feedback, mentoring, and guidance to less experienced development engineers.

Qualifications

Required Education:

  • Bachelor of Science in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Material Science, or related science/engineering field.

Required Skills & Experience:

  • 4 years of manufacturing/process development experience.

  • 2 years of knowledge and experience of component mfg methods (e.g., injection molding, machining, stamping) and machine elements (e.g., gears, pulleys, cables)

  • Experience in the development and manufacture of plastic and/or metal components and their associated mechanical assemblies.

  • Experience with measurement systems analysis (GR&R), COGs assessments, and/or IQ/OQ/PQ activities.

  • Experience with Design for Manufacturing/Assembly/Cost, Process FMEA, process flow development, and/or mitigation control implementation.

  • Experience with statistical analysis techniques (process DOE, process validation/stability/control/capability) and qualifying component manufacturing processes.

  • Experience with pre-production builds, equipment design, and/or assembly process development, optimization, and error-proofing.

  • Experience with engineering drawing interpretation including GD&T

  • Highly organized and creative, with strong analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills

  • Solid technical communication and interpersonal skills

  • Experience giving/taking direction and working independently with minimal guidance.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to travel up to 25% domestic US and Internationally, with overnight stay.

  • Ability to work onsite at the J&J office in Cincinnati, OH.

Preferred Skills & Experience:

  • Master’s degree in manufacturing engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Material Science, or related science/engineering field, with a minimum of 3 years of manufacturing/process development experience.

  • Experience working in a regulated industry with the associated manufacturing environment and design control requirements.

  • Experience with one or more of: laser welding, riveting, laser etching, soldering, pressing, joining, extrusion, over molding, and/or coating.

  • Proven ability to work independently with external suppliers.

  • Experience in a multi-functional environment and partnering with design teams on new product development.

  • Experience with Process Excellence Six Sigma.

  • Possess a growth mindset, adapting to challenges and interested in continuous improvement.

  • Proven track record achieving results across functional and organizational boundaries.

  • Demonstrated high initiative and self-starter.

Work Environment:

  • This position operates in a laboratory/assembly environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and photocopiers.

Physical Demands:

  • May require lifting of up to 50 lbs. and operation of hoisting equipment for heavier loads.

  • May require prolonged periods of standing, bending, sitting, and kneeling during system assembly.

The anticipated base pay range for this position is $88,000 to $141,450.

The Company maintains highly competitive, performance-based compensation programs. Under current guidelines, this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus in accordance with the terms of the applicable plan. The annual performance bonus is a cash bonus intended to provide an incentive to achieve annual targeted results by rewarding for individual and the corporation’s performance over a calendar/performance year. Bonuses are awarded at the Company’s discretion on an individual basis.
