Job Overview The Department of Physics at the University of Cincinnati invites applications for a postdoctoral research position in observational astrophysics. The successful observational astrophysics candidate will work with Professor Matthew Bayliss. Prof. Bayliss' group works on a wide range of topics related to gravitational lensing by massive galaxy groups and clusters. For this postdoctoral position we expect the selected candidate to work on multi-wavelength studies of the interstellar medium, stellar populations, and the production and escape of ionizing photons in distant, highly magnified galaxies. The postdoctoral fellow will work as a core member of the Sloan Giant Arcs Survey (SGAS) and LEnsing and Galaxy Growth: Observing Substructures (LEGGOS) collaborations. The postdoctoral fellow will have opportunities to develop new projects in collaboration with Prof. Bayliss, including projects using available data from the James Webb Space Telescope, the Hubble Space Telescope, and the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The postdoctoral fellow will also be supported and encouraged to submit their own proposals for new projects and will have opportunities, if interested, to mentor graduate and undergraduate students working on their own research projects. The position includes funds for professional travel, publications and computing and offer a competitive salary with health benefits. This position will be two-year appointments with an option to extend to a third year. The ideal start date is August 2025 or earlier. Essential Functions * Under close supervision, conceptualize and conduct research projects on a wide range of topics related to gravitational lensing by massive galaxy groups and clusters, including multi-wavelength studies of the interstellar medium, stellar populations, and the production and escape of ionizing photons in distant, highly magnified galaxies. * Gather and analyze data and develop new ideas that promote current research. * Prepare data summaries, reports, manuscripts and presentations of research results. * Train, teach techniques to, and mentor junior researchers. * Participate/assist in manuscript writing for publication in scientific journals and/or presentation; may assist in grant writing. * Establish and manage collaborations with other research groups. * Keep informed of developments in field to maintain and enhance professional expertise. * Engage in appropriate training and professional development opportunities. Minimum Requirements Prior to the effective date of appointment, must have a Ph.D. in physics, astronomy, or a closely related field.
