Job Description - Environmental Specialist I- This position is open to all territory HQ's (Plainsfield NJ, Cincinnati OH, Florida, Raleigh NC and Charlotte NC Summary Responsible for providing the support necessary to ensure that generating facilities and company operations are in compliance with federal, state and local environmental laws and regulations in addition to corporate environmental policies and procedures. Expertise may be required in the areas of air, water, waste and/or hazardous materials. Works under close supervision. Performs tasks that are usually from detailed instructions and established procedures. Work is reviewed for soundness of technical judgment for following defined policies and procedures. Serves as an environmental subject matter expert and provides technical expertise and judgement to resolve basic environmental issues. Performs trend analyses, incident investigations and site audits for assigned functions, Works with others in permit applications and renewals. Evaluates and reviews basic proposed and existing codes, standards, regulations, and guidelines to determine the impact on company programs and facility operations and assist in comments to regulatory authorities. Maintains current knowledge on environmental laws and regulations and a working knowledge of technical aspects of regulatory requirements. Basic/Required Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree in science or Engineering In lieu of Degree High School Diploma or GED and 4 years' experience Desired Qualifications: Master's degree in business, Engineering or Science Experience with environmental programs such as floodplain permitting, erosion control, NWP, etc. in North and South Carolina. Demonstrated experience providing input and challenging processes to optimize efficiency, look for streamlining opportunities, etc. Experience supporting linear projects such as pipeline projects or distribution/transmission systems. Duties and Responsibilities: Serves as subject matter expert for basic technical program and compliance issues and supports company's environmental goals, strategies, program, and processes. With assistance develops and maintains procedures and programs to assist facilities in complying with environmental laws and regulations. Works with others to ensure that Duke Energy work procedures address compliance guidance. Assist with tracking regulatory changes, legislative activities, and industry standards. Under direction works with federal, state, and local regulatory authorities to interpret regulations and laws. Supports Duke Energy participation on various internal/external industry standards. Provide basic regulatory-required and internal environmental reports. Assist with assigned environmental training programs. Participates in preparation, submittal and negotiation of permits and permit renewals with federal, state, and local authorities. Assist with communication of permit requirements to facilities. Work with EHS Professionals and facility personnel to update various facility plans and documents that require knowledge and experience while minimizing impacts to operational activities. Works with others to support accomplishments of work unit goals and enhance company reputation through effective planning, organizing, communication and scheduling of environmental work activities.
