This Opportunity

WSP is currently initiating a search for an Environmental Compliance Specialist for our Columbus, Ohio office. The following offices will also be considered: Indianapolis and Cincinnati . Environmental Compliance Specialist supports company environmental compliance and is an integral part of the overall Earth and Environment practice.

This individual will serve a key function in performing air permitting and compliance, industrial wastewater and stormwater compliance, storage tank registration and compliance evaluations, waste management, multi-media environmental compliance audits, development of monitoring and spill prevention and contingency plans, Hazardous Waste Minimization and Contingency Plan development, annual/biennial waste reporting, and other report writing. In this role, you will prepare permits and plans, and interact with clients and senior management.

This position will support the building of our Earth and Environment EHS Compliance business across the Midwest and expanding our services with our clients. This position could be based out of one of the following Midwest USA offices: Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, or Wisconsin.

Your Impact

  • Prepare permits and compliance programs for multiple environmental media, including air, wastewater, stormwater, waste, spill prevention and storage tanks, EPCRA (Tier II, TRI);

  • Perform multi-media environmental compliance audits, gap assessments, inspections, and program reviews;

  • Develop and support implementation and management of various monitoring and spill prevention and contingency plans/programs (SPCC, FRP, SWPPP, Hazardous Waste Contingency Plans, etc.);

  • Lead and/or assist in the preparation of proposals including development of scope and costs;

  • Demonstrated knowledge of federal, state, and local air regulations with emphasis on the Clean Air Act, including New Source Review/Prevention of Significant Deterioration, National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants, New Source Performance Standards, Title V Permitting, Title VI Ozone Depleting Substances.

  • Perform emission calculations and estimates for routine emissions, as well as greenhouse gas and maintenance, start-up and shutdown emissions.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the Recourse Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), and Toxic Substance Control Act (TSCA), and the Department of Transportation (DOT) hazmat shipment requirements.

  • Work with client and team members to manage projects, budgets and timelines.

  • Manage project budgets and assist in invoicing as project or task manager;

  • Interacts with and builds relationships with clients, contractors/subcontractors, and internal practice leaders;

  • Demonstrates a strong commitment to customer service and responsiveness to client needs;

  • Manage and deliver on multiple projects and tasks within specific budgets, schedules, and deadlines;

  • Prepare technical documents including reports, plans/programs, permit applications, and other written deliverables;

  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team to support projects located throughout the US.

  • Manage and oversee the preparation of NEPA documents prepared by consultants or internal staff and provide QA/QC for deliverables.

  • In coordination with project teams, develop agency engagement strategies to advocate for the client’s position on elements of the NEPA process (e.g., level of documentation, connected actions, alternatives, impacts, and mitigation).

  • Work collaboratively with environmental compliance experts within the WSP EHS community team and broader organization to client projects and opportunities.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Relevant undergraduate degree or equivalent experience.

  • At least 5 - 8 years of experience in an environmental compliance roles.

  • Experience in developing, implementing, and managing environmental standards, procedures, and guidance.

  • Experience in project management, and project delivery

  • Knowledge and experience in environmental compliance and reporting requirements and regulations.

  • Ability to quickly establish credibility and build effective client relationships,

  • Highly collaborative, with the proven ability to form, facilitate and maintain cross-business teams.

  • Excellent interpersonal communication and influencing skills with ability to communicate well with many levels of the organization.

  • Working knowledge of most common software tools.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM)

  • Certified Environmental Manager (CEM)

  • ISO 140001 training

  • Experience in compliance and/or systems auditing

Other Requirements

  • Travel up to 40%

  • Ability to drive
