Summary You will serve as an AIR CONDITIONING EQUIPMENT MECHANIC in the Public Works Department of NAVFAC SOUTHWEST. Responsibilities You will install, repair, inspect, operate, maintain, and service specialized heating, ventilation, air conditioning systems and refrigeration equipment systems. You will maintain and service compressed air generating, drying and oil removal equipment for pneumatic controllers and monitoring devices. You will perform modifications and tests on controls. You will calculate air flow, and the pressure temperature characteristics for different systems in order to locate and repair faulty equipment swiftly and to reduce inoperative time to minimum. You will maintain and test water treatment chemical equipment (conductivity controllers and chemical feed pumps). You will read blueprints, complex drawings, sketches, wiring diagrams, manufacturing specifications and technical materials. The Screen-out Element for this position is:1) Interpreting instructions, specifications and blueprints to repair air conditioning and refrigeration systems; 2) Troubleshooting air conditioning and refrigeration system operations to detect component malfunctions; and 3) Installing and repairing a variety of large commercial and industrial refrigeration, and air conditioning equipment. I work under close supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. Physical Demands: The mechanic makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, and ground level; and stoop, stretch, bend, and kneel for long periods. The work requires frequent carrying and setting up of parts and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds. Occasionally may lift items weighing over 50 pounds with assistance. Working Conditions: The incumbent works both inside and outside, on top of tall buildings, in drafty attic spaces, and in cramped areas with low overheads. Personal protective equipment may be required to be worn when there is a possibility of exposure to toxic refrigerants during regular maintenance.
