Nexstar Media Group Vice President/General Manager in Chicago, Illinois

Nexstar Media Inc., America’s largest local broadcasting company, is seeking a Vice President & General Manager to lead its media properties in Chicago, Illinois (DMA #3). The General Manager will have full oversight of WGN (Independent), as well as wgntv.com, and all other digital, mobile, and social media assets for the stations.

WGN will become an affiliate of The CW Network on September 1st, 2024.

WGN is Chicago’s Very Own source for news and entertainment. The station has a rich and significant history in Chicago. From the very beginning, WGN has provided viewers with local news, hometown sports, and children’s programming. WGN celebrated its 75th Anniversary of service to Chicago in 2023. Today, WGN produces more news and local programming than any other Chicago station and is actively involved in the community through its charitable arm WGN-TV Family Charities.

Chicago is an international hub for finance, culture, commerce, technology, and transportation. It’s the third largest city in the country. It’s home to 15 Fortune 500 Companies and 40 colleges and universities. Chicago has six professional sports teams. The ideal candidate for this role will utilize their proven skillsets and demonstrable experience in leading broadcast operational teams with sales-driven organizations, developing locally originated content, and commitment to community service to further propel our linear and digital audiences. Promoting a winning culture of teamwork within all station departments and prior success in maintaining a focus on operational efficiencies and growth in programming performance and new local revenue generation is required.

Essential Duties and Requirements

Ideal candidates will have a minimum of five years of management experience as a General Manager at a commercial broadcast television station with accompanying digital assets. The right fit for this position will be a seasoned and knowledgeable professional who is a driven advocate of local broadcasting and digital service to the community in which they have previously served, and a proven history of audience growth. In addition, ideal candidates should possess a strong track record of revenue achievement, share growth and financial expense understanding. This position requires a leader with exemplary strategic vision, focused execution, and a verified understanding of local outreach and thoughtful community involvement. In addition to having a proven track record of managing high-performing sales, and news teams, the successful candidate must be effective in collaborating with department heads and staff members, while promoting teamwork within all areas of station operations, preferably with oversight of a large staff. The ability to engage local community leaders and develop long-term relationships with key station clients is essential.
