About the Department
The Section of Adult and Pediatric Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism is a national leader in research leading to the development of new insights in the treatment of endocrine diseases and disorders. Work in the areas of diabetes, thyroid and sleep disorders has been greatly advanced by The University of Chicago endocrinology faculty. Our research activities are supported by a number of different sources including the National Institute of Health (NIH) and non-federal granting agencies. The Section is home to one of 16 NIH funded Diabetes Research and Training Centers. Over the years, several members of the Endocrine faculty have led investigations that resulted in significant discoveries in the areas of diabetes, thyroid and sleep disorders.
Job Summary
The Emont lab studies the development and function of adipocytes and the remodeling of adipose tissues under different phyisiological states. Projects in the lab include both wet lab (cell culture, animal work, human tissue) and dry lab (single cell and other -omics data analysis). The Staff Scientist plans, executes, facilitates and promotes advanced technical/scientific research projects. Recognizes the need for innovation and develops or incorporates advances in research concepts, methodologies and approaches.
Responsibilities
- Designs, develops and tests experimental protocols for research (including empirical protocols, computational, statistical methods, etc.).
- Collaborates with other researchers as appropriate.
- Participates in the preparation and writing of grant applications and reports, and co-authors scientific research manuscripts.
- May supervise other research staff.
- May present work at scientific meetings, and provide peer review of grant applications and scientific manuscripts.
- The individual in this role will be involved in all aspects of the design, development, implementation, and analysis of their research project.
- Serves as a resource for collecting data and performing analysis. Facilitates and promotes a research project by providing scientific or intellectual information.
- Develops laboratory protocols and training on new techniques. Manage, analyze and make recommendations on complex data sets for research.
- Performs other related work as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
Education:
Minimum requirements include a PhD in related field.

- Doctoral degree.
Experience:
- Experience in developing and implementing mouse experimental protocols, with emphasis on phenotypical characterization of genetically modified animals.
- Experience with cell and animal metabolic studies.
- Experience withcell culture.
- Experience with data analysis.
- Experience with assisting in training, a strong publication record, and a demonstrated commitment to excellence in research.
- Knowledge in general cell biology/physiology.
- Knowledge in type 2 diabetes, adipose biology, or similar.
- Knowledge of metabolism-related research techniques or methods.
- Knowledge of regulatory policies and procedures.
