Position Summary:
Kemper is a publicly traded, multi-billion-dollar insurance and financial services company, and we are seeking a talented and motivated accounting professional to join our Corporate Accounting team at our headquarters in downtown Chicago. This is a fantastic role for a strong performer who is looking to greatly expand their knowledge within a multi-faceted insurance company (P&C, Life) that has exposure to US GAAP, Statutory, and Bermuda GAAP accounting practices. Kemper has a proven track record for developing its people for higher roles within the department as well as other functions and across its operating entities. We seek a detail-oriented professional to assist with a wide range of monthly, quarterly and annual accounting functions associated with Kemper’s financial reporting.
Position Responsibilities:
Take the lead on preparing monthly and quarterly expense analytics on a consolidated and segment basis with a focus on understanding key trends in insurance expenses (commissions, premium taxes) and general/administrative expenses (employee compensation, IT and building facilities).
Assist with the preparation and review of all MD&A commentary on expenses, both for on a consolidated and segment basis, that is included within the quarterly 10-Q and annual 10-K.
Assist with the coordination and completion of the annual goodwill impairment test; including the quarterly review of any indicators of impairment that may require a goodwill impairment test in advance of the annual review.
Assist with the quarterly review and impairment testing for all intangible assets.
Participate in the implementation of recently issued accounting standards focused on expenses and support the accounting policy team with the evaluation of the impact of any proposed accounting standards on expenses.
Review and approve journal entries and account reconciliations specific to Corporate accounting areas, including but not limited to employee compensation (both short term and long term) and employee benefits.
Participate in periodic quality assurance related reviews of existing reconciliations across the entire accounting department.
Ad hoc projects as needed
Position Requirements:
5-7 years of experience in public accounting and/or SEC reporting for a large public company
BA/BS degree in Accounting or Finance
CPA preferred
Familiarity with US GAAP and US Statutory accounting practices
Experience navigating a large ERP environment
Experience in Workday General ledger a plus
Effective writing skills and strong attention to detail required
Strong analytical, organizational, and time management skills
Progressive thinking skills, a strong work ethic, and a knack for innovative solutions
Excellent communication skills to interact with varying levels of management and professional staff
Ability to identify, analyze, and solve complex accounting issues
The selected candidate will work a hybrid work schedule which will require weekly reporting to our Chicago, IL office
