Summary:

The RN Lactation Consultant is a registered professional nurse who provides holistic nursing care through the nursing process to individuals, groups, families, or communities. The RN provides care to patients with complex breastfeeding issues that require high levels of care, including: high-risk pregnant patients; babies with tongue-tie, prematurity and failure to thrive; and mothers with low milk supply, infections, and/or complex medication regimens. Required Job Qualifications:

• Bachelors Degree in Nursing

• Current RN license in Illinois

• Certified as International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC).

• Current Basic Life Support (BLS)

• A minimum of 2-3 years clinical experience in maternal/neonatal nursing

Preferred Job Qualifications:

• 1 year outpatient ambulatory experience

• 2-3 years experience as a IBCLC (inpatient or outpatient)

• Experience with EPIC electronic health record

• Experience providing lactation support in a clinical setting, preferably in an outpatient, academic environment.

Physical Demands:

• Work condition include performing procedures where carelessness could result in injury or illness and/or contact with potentially infections materials and/or strong chemical agents

• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with established time constraints and in difficult situations.

• Ability to walk throughout the Medical Center and to be standing or walking most of the designated shift

• Ability to lift or carry objects 35-40lbs.

Responsibilities:

• Assists with training and precepting lactation team members

• Collaborate with a board-certified breastfeeding and lactation medicine physician in patient encounters

• Must be comfortable documenting in the electronic health record on both the parent and infant in a dyad

• Must be comfortable with shared documentation with physicians, CMAs, RNs, and other learners within the clinical space.

• Fosters the importance of cultural sensitivity, inclusivity, and the ability to provide equitable care to all patients, regardless of their background or individual circumstances including the ability to support a diverse patient population such as those who speak English as a second language, gender diversity, variances in racial backgrounds and socioeconomic statuses, disabilities, etc.

• Performs initial and on-going assessments of the parent/baby dyad’s lactation goals

• Effective communication skills and being able to consult with a wide range of physician and healthcare professionals including pediatricians, neonatologists, labor and delivery nursing teams, otolaryngologists, breast surgeons, speech therapists, occupational therapists, etc.

• Responsible for maintaining a pump rental station, supplies, and equipment.

• Develop feeding plans to address the nutritional needs of the infant that may include but are not limited to breast/chest feeding support, pumping support, and supplementation as appropriate

• Identifies, monitors, and evaluates quality and safety issues related to practice.

• Maintains current knowledge of lactation research and reflects this knowledge in current lactation practice.

• Pursues continuing education relevant to lactation consultant practice including reading current professional journals, participating in workshops, seminars, in-service programs, conferences, accredited courses, and professional organizations
