About the Department

The Department of Microbiology faculty researches a vast array of bacteria and viruses. We are a community of faculty, postdoctoral scholars, students, and staff committed to research and education in the field of microbiology. Our faculty conduct interdisciplinary research that advances the study of microbes and microbial diseases. Basic research in Microbiology underwrites our effort for eradication of important pathogens, prevention of human diseases, development of gene therapies and the evolution of new strategies for personalized medicine. We are also committed to training the next generation of scientists. This at-will position is wholly or partially funded by contractual grant funding which is renewed under provisions set by the grantor of the contract. Employment will be contingent upon the continued receipt of these grant funds and satisfactory job performance.

Job Summary

The Laboratory Manager manages the day-to-day activities of a complex research area including a BSL3 facility. As the Laboratory Manager, you will provide training, assigns task, and evaluate work of a research team; in addition, you will serve as the lead for departmental policies and protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Manages the day-to-day activities and the overall workflow of projects. Leads in lab maintenance, establishing lab safety protocols, and coordinating project and lab personnel schedules
  • Helps monitor compliance with institutional, state, and federal regulatory policies, procedures, directives, and mandates.
  • Utilizes research methods requiring a high degree of proficiency to achieve established research objectives. Evaluates existing methods and objectives and investigates, develops, and implements solutions to problems.
  • Organizes data into a professional format, performs data reconstruction and analysis, summarizes results, and presents data to PI. Effectively communicates, coordinates, and troubleshoots team-based research efforts through participation in laboratory and research meetings. May collaborate with clinical and basic scientists in other labs. Represents the PI as needed.
  • Helps train research technicians, students and post-doctoral fellows.
  • Uses subject matter and best practices knowledge to perform lab and/or research-related duties and tasks. Works independently to assist with project design.
  • Solves complex problems relating to the administration of projects, including planning new procedures, adapting existing procedures to the needs of the project, and making significant contributions to methodology.
  • Guides data collection, evaluation and analysis. Designs and manages databases. Writes reports, articles and manuscripts.
  • Presents research findings at meetings and conferences, as well as to funding agencies. Conducts literature reviews. Develop and maintain liaisons and effective working relations with groups and individuals, agencies, and the public to encourage cooperative management strategies or to develop information and interpret findings.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Experience:

  • Skilled in the bioinformatics analysis of large genomic, metagenomic and metatranscriptomic datasets.
  • Advanced knowledge in relevant sc entific field, research techniques, scientific applications and equipment.
