ECMO RN Manager

Work Schedule: 8 Hr (8:00:00 AM - 5:00:00 PM)

Summary:

Under indirect supervision, the ECMO RN Manger plans, implements, and evaluates the administrative and direct patient care activities for assigned program team staff. Directs a team of professional and support staff to ensure assessment, planning, provision and evaluation of patient care to at-risk patients and their families. Provides administrative management and oversight of patient care activities for the ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) program. Exemplifies the Rush mission, vision and values and acts in accordance with Rush policies and procedures.

Required Job Qualifications:

• Current State of Illinois Registered Nurse licensure.

• Earned nursing degree at the baccalaureate or higher (except RNs hired and already working at Rush University Medical Center before October 2012).

• Three years critical care experience with one year in a Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit or Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.

• Demonstrated ability to teach utilizing principles of adult learning.

• Strong knowledge of quality improvement methodology, leadership and decision-making skills.

• Must be able to safely and properly select, set-up and operate all systems outlined in the Policy, Procedure and Guideline Manual appropriate to the job description.

• Must be able to maintain composure and perform his/her duties in an emergency situation requiring quick recall of knowledge, efficient actions, and the ability to prioritize appropriately and demonstrate flexibility when a situation changes unexpectedly.

• Effective interpersonal skills required in interactions with department staff, medical and nursing staff, other hospital employees, parents/guardians, other agencies and institutions, and the public.

• High level of initiative, self-direction and accountability for actions.

• Must be able to properly set-up and prime the ECMO pump.

Responsibilities:

  1. Manages day-to-day operations of the ECMO program, while assuring all performance standards of staff are met. Oversees direct patient care management, delivery of patient care by all professionals within the program. Schedules resources to provide patient care in a cost effective manner: Establishes Call schedule, In-house ECMO specialist schedule. Plans/facilities intra-/inter-hospital transport of the CMO patient. Teaches, precepts, and mentors ECMO primers and specialists to function in accordance with standards and expectations. Promotes teamwork by building a team environment and fostering cross-functional collaboration.

  2. Provides direct care to ECMO patients, performing all functions of the ECMO specialist as necessary. Responsible for priming the ECMO and dialysis circuit and stabilizing these patients after cannulation. May share clinical responsibilities, such as priming the ECMO circuit. Maintains a high level of clinical expertise in the area of ECMO to perform direct patient care as necessary.

  3. Develops reviews and updates protocols and job descriptions. Maintains established institutional policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, environmental and infection control standards. Develops and implements established goals and objectives for quality management plans to met the medical center strategic goals.

  4. Performs administrative management functions, including budget management, statistics and reporting, billing and reimbursement tracking and related administrative activities for the ECMO program. Monitors, evaluates and justifies monthly budget expenditures and revenue.

  5. Ensures a system for tracking and maintaining equipment and supplies. Evaluates new technologies, equipment and supplies. Coordinates evaluation of new items though the appropriate committees. Collaborates with purchasing and Cardiovascular Perfusion manager to prepare high-cost equipment bids.

  6. Collaborates with ECMO Medical Director, Chairs and physician groups on an ongoing basis to achieve patient and program goals. Communicates with nursing managers, respiratory therapy manager and director of Extracorporeal Services to facilitate program goals for the ECMO program.

  7. Assists in the collection and review of clinical data to evaluate the ECMO program. Maintains a patient record database, further provides this information to the ELSO organization for statistical evaluation and comparison to other ECMO programs both foreign and domestic. Continually evaluates literature, equipment and trends related to cardiopulmonary bypass, ECMO/ECLS, and dialysis.

  8. Oversees the supervision of personnel, which includes hiring, work allocation, training and problem resolution; evaluates performance and makes recommendations for personnel actions; motivates employees to achieve peak productivity and performance.

  9. Assesses continuing education needs of the ECMO staff. Plans and implements strategies to meet identified needs. Consults with critical care units in support of their staff education needs. Establishes competency testing schedule and maintains records for hospital accreditation. Establishes a remediation process. Provides ECMO training for students in the Rush University Perfusion Technology Program.

  10. Conducts, coordinates and supports clinical research projects.

  11. Maintains an active role in state and national professional organizations. Represents the program at internal and external committees, meetings and conferences. Attends annual ECMO manager meeting held at regional ECMO conferences.

  12. Supports the philosophy and objectives of Rush University Medical Center and assists in interpreting these to referral agencies and the community. Serves as a clinical resource for Rush University Medical Center departments and referral hospitals inquiring about ECMO.
