Job Description

Boston College bOp! Vocal Director

The Vocal Director position supports the instrumental and vocal jazz ensemble of Boston College (which we call BC bOp!). BC Bands seeks a qualified vocal jazz professional dedicated to teaching and developing the vocal jazz skills of the vocal section of BC bOp! Reporting to the Ensemble Director, this 9 month position will work a minimum of ten (10) hours per week which includes attending all rehearsals and performances.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • The Vocal Director is required to attend all rehearsals and all performances.

  • Coordinate joint vocal and instrumental ensemble rehearsals with BC bOp! Director

  • In cooperation with the ensemble Director, create a syllabus and rehearsal plans for every meeting Instruct members in fundamentals of jazz style

  • Maintain timeliness, order and structure in rehearsals to insure effective and efficient use of rehearsal time

  • Plan a repertoire that includes a variety of styles and provides musical challenges to the members

  • Ensure the highest possible level of performance from the members thorough a proper warm-up process, effective preparation, attention to musical and organizational detail and attention to individual members

Overall Administration

  • Recruit potential members

  • Plan and hold auditions for membership

  • Maintain a cooperative working relationship with the Director of BC bOp!, ensemble members and University Administration

  • Manage all equipment necessary for rehearsals and performances including maintenance, repair, and acquisition recommendations

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Music or equivalent experience teaching vocal music

  • Experience teaching and/or performing vocal jazz professionally

  • Experience with music notation software such as Finale or Sibelius

  • Familiarity with audio and sound reinforcement equipment set-up, use and maintenance

  • Must be able to relate to, teach, and motivate college students
