Chesapeake Regional Healthcare Office Medical Assistant in Chesapeake, Virginia

The Medical Assistant is responsible for coordinating services for patient registration and patient care, including but not limited to: scheduling appointments, collecting demographic and insurance information, communicating with other departments, phlebotomy, and direct patient care.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

These duties and responsibilities described below represent the general tasks performed on a daily basis; other tasks may be assigned.

General:

  • Greet all visitors promptly and courteously, and direct patients and visitors to appropriate areas

  • Recognize and respond appropriately to urgent/emergent situations per protocols

  • Maintain professional appearance and personal conduct at all times

  • Communicate clearly, in person and on the phone, and establish/maintain cooperative relationships with patients, families, physicians, staff, and other customers

  • Demonstrate collaboration and collegiality in all work settings

  • Ensure that all incoming telephone calls are answered in a prompt and courteous manner, and

are routed to the correct extension within the department or hospital

  • Use communication skills with appropriate medical terminology

  • Demonstrate a commitment to flexible work scheduling when necessary to ensure patient care

  • Maintain safe, secure, and healthy work environment by establishing and following standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations

Clinical:

  • Prepares patients for infusion treatments and performs routine screening tests

  • Measures and records vital signs, height, and weight

  • Collects blood samples, labels correctly, and delivers if necessary

  • Retrieves blood products and medications as needed

  • Assists patients with ambulation and toileting as needed

  • Changes dressings, applies bandages, and provides other first aid procedures

  • Clean patient care areas/chairs and dispose of contaminated supplies

  • Assist with monitoring supplies and stocking department and orders according to appropriate restock quantities

Clerical:

  • Answers phones and assist the patient with rescheduling appointments

  • Update patient insurance information and demographics, collect and record co-payments, provide any necessary forms needing completion, and obtain required signatures as necessary

  • Arrange for the efficient and orderly registration of patients, ensuring that accurate patient information is collected.

  • Prepares and types correspondence

  • Maintains a clean and orderly waiting area, including beverage area and reading materials

  • Orders and maintains supplies and equipment

  • Arranges for hospital admissions and outside referrals when necessary

Education and Experience

Minimum Required Education: Successful graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant or Hospital Corpsman program

Preferred Education: Not applicable

Experience: 2+ years’ experience in customer service, preferably with 6+ months in a physician’s office/medical clinic

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Applicant must hold current BLS certification.
