Job Title: Certified Medical Assistant

Position Summary: The Certified Medical Assistant will provide patient care assistance to the Physicians, Nurse Practitioners and Registered Nurses. Additionally, the Certified Medical Assistant will have the following duties and responsibilities of telephone triage support, maintaining patient flow through clinic, bringing back patients for their appointments, obtaining the medical history form and verifying information with the patient, entering medical history information into the EMR system, prepping patients for any/all procedures performed in the Infusion Center, generating referrals, prescriptions, testing referrals, and all discharge paperwork using an EMR system, scheduling the patient’s follow up appointment as needed, discharging patients and answering any questions that they may have, ordering medical supplies and stocking inventory, maintaining clean exam rooms and stock with supplies.

Qualifications: CMA, RMA, CCMA, or NCMA, certification through an NCCA accredited program (see approved provider list below); or LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse) or RN (Registered Nurse) through the State of Michigan; or is eligible to register to take the exam through one of the approved providers prior to date of hire, and successfully attains CMA, RMA, CCMA or NCMA certification within 6 months from date of hire or transfer required. The approved provider list includes the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), the American Medical Technologists (AMT), the National HealthCareer Association (NHA) or the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT), 2-3 years recent experience in a medical setting as a medical assistant or LPN; medical terminology; strong computer skills; ability to work directly with the medical team in a fast-paced growing environment and a commitment to service excellence. Must perform specific competencies as assigned for the role.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

Maintains good rapport and cooperative relationships. Approaches conflict in a constructive manner. Helps to identify problems, offer solutions, and participates in their resolution.

Maintains the confidentiality of information acquired pertaining to patient, physicians, employees, and visitors to St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea/Saint Joseph Mercy Health System. Discusses patient and hospital information only among appropriate personnel in appropriately private places.

Maintains knowledge to perform the duties of the job. Assumes responsibility for performance of job duties in the safest possible manner, to assure personal safety and that of coworkers, and to report all preventable hazards and unsafe practices immediately to management.

Demonstrates self-directed learning and maintains annual assigned competencies within the required timeline

Provides quality patient care by considering the age specific, development and cultural needs through competent clinical practice. Demonstrates unit/area competencies.

Identifies and assists in resolution of problems related to safety, sanitation and maintenance of the environment. Operates and maintains equipment in a safe and appropriate manner and promptly reports any defects/malfunctions. Maintains safe work environment and participates with team members in set-up and clean-up of lab, exam and triage areas.

Practices effective communication in all interactions (patient, visitor, co-worker, etc.)

Promotes a positive work environment by demonstrating teamwork.

Delivers basic age-appropriate nursing care effectively and efficiently.

Controls patient flow to and from infusion bays, injection and exam rooms while assisting with positioning, ambulating and transporting patients safely.

Assists patients with dietary needs.

Anticipates and provides comfort measures for patients.

Answers call lights and responds to patient requests promptly.

Assists members of the medical team, as directed, within their scope of practice.

Documents patient care or unit related information according to hospital standards by maintaining proficiency in current EMR system. Functions included patient tracking, documenting vital signs, height, weight, pain level assessment, performance of patient allergy and medical history and update, flowing outside lab work into the record, documenting injections and port flushes in questionnaire, printing lab results and patient demographics as needed, performing charging function for billable activities performed to ensure all charges have been documented for care rendered by the Medical Assistant

Is proficient in venipuncture skills and accessing vascular access devices. Follows protocol for dressing changes, obtaining blood and flushing of vascular access devices.

Administers IM and SQ injections and documents treatment.

Follows appropriate procedures for the performance of all laboratory tests in a hematology oncology setting.

Preparation of specimens to be sent to various facilities for testing. These include but aren't limited to: bone marrow specimens, STAT lab work.

Reviews and documents patient lab values. Reports clinical lab values, vital signs and pain assessment levels to the appropriate person.

Monitors and submits orders for all supplies for Infusion Center including all supplies for lab testing. Responds to emergency situations in Infusion Center per protocol.

Actively complies with and supports SJMC Employee Service Standards.

Provides psycho-social and emotional support to patients and families.

Works closely with Research Department to deliver care to research patients.

Demonstrates responsibility and accountability for own professional behavior. Attends clinical and staff meetings as directed.

Maintains confidentiality consistent with hospital and regulatory requirements.

Other Functions and Responsibilities

1) Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education, Experience and Certification/Licensure

Current c ertification as a Medical Assistant or obtain certification within 6 months of starting in the position; or unexpired license as a LPN in the State of Michigan 2-3 years recent experience in a medical setting as a medical assistant or LPN. Medical Assistant Certification required or obtained within six months of hire date.
