Job Summary

Serves as a survey crew member performing a wide variety of surveys including, but not limited to: transmission line and highway route,boundary, route, geodetic control, GPS, construction, hydrographic, topographic, volumetric, flood study, photo control and deformation.

Assigned tasks may include:

  • Works ahead of survey party to maintain alignment for brush cutting, selects suitable transit station ahead and sets accurate transit points.

  • Prepares field notes and sketches, performs simple surveying measurements and records data on electronic data collector under the direction of higher-level employees. Typical notes and calculations involve locations relative to surveys. Is responsible for the accuracy and adequacy of the information obtained.

  • Records survey data, including topographic data, centerline profile and property line ties using electronic survey data collectors and is responsible for the accuracy and adequacy of the information obtained.

  • Holds prism accurately on stations while instruments read data.

  • May substitute for higher level employee in the operation, care and adjustment of the transit, total station and other surveying instruments.

  • Clears brush and small trees ahead of survey crew.

  • Required to travel inside and outside the Tennessee Valley, and perform other duties as assigned.

    Supervision Received

    Supervisor (party chief or engineer) sets objective and schedules, and reviews completed work for overall conformance to policy. During the course of coordinating the overall efforts of the entire party, the supervisor frequently observes the work in progress.

    Must be able to operate typical TVA surveying equipment.

    Skills and Proficiencies (May be job or organization specific)

  • Must be able to perform in surveyed related mathematics (geometry, trigonometry).

  • Must have knowledge of personal computer and be able to use surveying related software.

  • Must be able to effectively work as a team member and effectively communicate with associates.

  • Must be able to use brush and tree cutting tools safely.

  • Understands TVA surveying data collection terminology and input requirements.

  • Properly marks survey stakes.

  • Holds prism pole accurately.

    Minimum Qualifications (Consistent with Classification Standard)

    Education and Experience/Certificates, Licenses, and Registration Requirements/Other Requirements

    A.S. degree in Surveying or Civil Technology or field experience demonstrating competencies in a variety of survey assignments and demonstrated ability to adequately perform survey assignments. Incumbent must be medically qualified and capable of performing work in the field survey conditions while following PSO Safety Manual standards at all times. Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to safely operate TVA survey vehicles.
