EPB Senior Accountant in Chattanooga, Tennessee

Job Summary:

The Senior Accountant will perform professional level financial accounting and reporting activities. Prepares reports and financial documents (including the Annual Report), performs revenue and expense analysis, reconciles data to the general ledger, is an integral part of the budget process, and performs other related duties as assigned. All work must be accomplished following Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.

Requirements:

  • Primary functions will include Financial Reporting, including an Annual Report, and preparation of the Annual Budget. Other general and administrative tasks as assigned.

  • Review and analyze the workflow of EPB's Financial Reporting to ensure the records' accuracy, timeliness, and appropriateness.

  • Assist in coordinating the preparation of monthly Financial Statements, the Annual Budget, and the Annual Report. Ensure that errors are corrected, and the monthly financials are completed within an average of seven working days. Also serve as team leader on special projects as needed.

  • Review and analyze the training needs of new accountants and provide training as a mentor.

  • Research, verify, and enter adjusting entries to the general ledger, as required, to correct postings to incorrect account numbers and/or jobs.

  • Research and prepare monthly journals for non-standard amortizations, bonds, etc.

  • Develop new procedures/workflows to improve the accounting department processes' efficiency, accuracy, and timeliness. Consult, research, and advise other departments relative to their accounting procedures.

  • Review, research, and analyze new FERC, FCC, FASB, and GASB pronouncements. Determine their impact on EPB financials and ensure any required changes are incorporated accurately and timely.

  • Provide expert assistance to an Accountant I or Accountant II in EPB accounting records and processes. Should be able to evaluate the reasonableness of data quickly, spot errors, recognize abnormal relationships, and identify potential problem areas. After assisting the Accountant I/II in spotting and correcting errors, the Senior Accountant is expected to follow up on the cause and methods for prevention.

  • Keep supervisor informed of accounting related activities and issues.

  • Prepare, maintain, or make entries to spreadsheets and databases as required to track expenses, collections, balances, and other data.

    Education and Experience

  • Bachelors Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field with successful completion of a minimum of 24 semester hours of accounting courses.

  • 5+ years of related experience and/or training.

  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office Applications; strong qualitative, quantitative, and analytical skills; demonstrated ability to excel in a team environment; strong and effective interpersonal skills; strong and effective oral and written communication skills.

  • Internal candidates will have demonstrated a mastery of Accountant II skills for at least one year before consideration for promotion. External candidates will be expected to master Accountant II skills within one year of the hire date.

  • Demonstrate skills to deal effectively with customers and employees and to understand detailed processes and procedures.

  • Demonstrate ability to collect, process, analyze and organize large quantities of detailed information into logical, concise reports and/or presentations.

  • Demonstrate ability to obtain proficiency in the use of computerized software and office equipment.

  • Demonstrate ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

  • Demonstrate experience in processing data with high speed and accuracy.

  • Demonstrat ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness, and creativity in situations involving various duties, often characterized by frequent changes.
