The ideal candidate will have 8 or more years of experience designing transmission lines for TVA or other similar utility and have directed the work of other engineers and technicians for 1 year or more. The candidate should possess an intimate knowledge of transmission line drawings and transmission construction practices. The candidate should be effective in training other technicians and engineers, checking and issuing transmission line drawing packages and be up to date on the current National Electric Safety Codes as they apply to transmission lines. This position requires the applicate to be the Responsible Engineer (RE) for all transmission lines projects assigned to anyone in their group and they will act as the official person responsible for making all transmission line decision as they pertain to internal and external stakeholders.

Job Summary

In a technical supervisory capacity, plans, develops, coordinates and directs large and important customer or reliability projects or a large number of smaller projects with complex features. Role includes responsibility for initial scope development and estimating stage, engineering and design activities and construction support including technical quality of the design, budget performance and schedule performance. A substantial portion of the work supervised is comparable to that described for a Senior Engineer. Publication of engineering papers and articles in professional and trade journals is desirable. May performs design or storm damage related inspections and developing temporary facilities using available materials.

Technically supervises coordinates and reviews the work of a small staff of engineers and technicians; estimates personnel needs; schedules and assigns work to meet completion dates. In making assignments, provides general design assumptions and performance requirements and reviews the results providing regular feedback. Responsible, as assigned, for the technical direction of engineers and support personnel of outside A/E firms who are providing contract engineering. The incumbent is responsible for the technical adequacy of the work and must be able to anticipate and resolve design standards issues.

The incumbent will not be responsible for the supervisory administrative duties of performance evaluations, disciplinary actions, selections, leave approval, promotions and pay changes.

Supervision Received

Supervision and guidance relate largely to overall objectives, critical issues, new concepts and policy matters. Consults with civil engineer, design or department manager concerning unusual developments.

Skills and Proficiencies (May be job or organization specific)

Demonstrated high working knowledge and proficiency in technical area related to the transmission system achieved at senior engineer and other supervisory ability including the ability to plan, budget, organize and direct staff. Demonstrated communications skills showing the ability to give clear direction to others, negotiate, confront difficult and adverse situations such as may exist when dealing with staff, suppliers, land owners, state and federal agencies, railroads, public utilities, A/E firms and higher levels of management.

Minimum Qualifications (Consistent with Classification Standard)

Education and Experience/Certificates, Licenses, and Registration Requirements/Other Requirements

A Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or comparable field of engineering study from an ABET accredited curriculum, plus continuing education. Several years experience involving civil engineering design at the senior/full performance level. Licensed Professional Engineer is desirable. Member of professional/technical societies is desirable. Incumbent may be required to be medically qualified and willing to work in the field and climb structures.
