Insight Global Electrical Engineer in Charlotte, North Carolina

Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled Combined Cycle Electrical Engineer to support the design, construction, and commissioning of combined cycle power plants. This role is primarily remote, with 30-40% travel to project sites for inspections, coordination, and field support (all travel expenses covered). The ideal candidate will have expertise in power generation electrical systems, including generators, transformers, switchgear, substations, protection systems, and balance-of-plant (BOP) electrical components.

Key Responsibilities:

Provide electrical engineering expertise for combined cycle power plant projects, ensuring compliance with design codes and industry standards.

Design and review electrical systems, including power distribution, grounding, lightning protection, and motor control systems.

Evaluate and specify electrical equipment such as generators, transformers, switchgear, UPS systems, and protection relays.

Conduct load flow, short circuit, arc flash, and relay coordination studies using software like ETAP or SKM PowerTools.

Support the selection and integration of electrical components for gas turbines, steam turbines, and HRSGs.

Review and approve electrical drawings, specifications, and contractor submittals.

Ensure compliance with NEC, IEEE, NFPA, and other applicable standards and regulations.

Provide technical support during construction, startup, and commissioning phases.

Troubleshoot electrical issues and provide solutions to optimize system performance.

Travel to project sites (30-40%) for field inspections, equipment installation support, and issue resolution.

Collaborate with mechanical, civil, and control system teams to ensure seamless project execution.

Skills and Requirements

Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering (Masters preferred).

Professional Engineer (PE) license is a plus.

5+ years of experience in electrical engineering, preferably in combined cycle power plants or similar industrial projects.

Proficiency in electrical design software such as ETAP, SKM PowerTools, AutoCAD Electrical, or PowerFactory.

Strong understanding of power systems, high-voltage equipment, and protection schemes.

Experience with medium and high-voltage switchgear, substations, and motor control centers (MCCs).

Ability to travel 30-40% for site visits, inspections, and project oversight. Experience in EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) projects.

Familiarity with international power plant construction standards and best practices.

Knowledge of digital control systems (DCS), SCADA, and plant automation. null
