Summary:

This post-graduate APP surgical training program is focused on Adult and Congenital Cardiac Surgery. Those who participate in this program will work with faculty and other APPs in the Division of Cardiothoracic at UNC Medical Center to learn to specialize in providing surgical care to this patient population.

The UNC Advanced Practice Provider (APP) post-graduate training program is intended to support trainees in transition to practice at UNC Health. APP trainees are members of

the healthcare team and are involved in inpatient, surgical and ambulatory care. Trainees receive advanced didactic education and focused clinical experiences so that graduates have the skills and knowledge to provide high quality primary and specialty care. The APP post-graduate program is attractive to recent APP graduates and practicing APPs who wish to redirect their careers toward new specialty and subspecialty areas consistent with graduate degree preparation.

The APP functions as part of an interdisciplinary healthcare team in accordance with privileges approved by the UNC Health credentialing committee to provide high-quality, cost-effective care to patients within the APPs scope of practice in collaboration with a supervising physician. The APP reflects the mission, vision, and values of UNC Health, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and other regulatory and accreditation standards.

Management will consider both New Grad and Experienced.

Work Schedule: Based on the requirements of the program.

Responsibilities:

  1. Clinical – APP provides diagnostic, therapeutic and preventative care under physician supervision. Actively incorporates evidence-based hospital initiatives to improve patient care. Conducts preventive health screening based on age, history, and patient needs. Consistently derives accurate diagnoses through synthesis of clinical data and proper selection and interpretation of diagnostic studies. Maintains clear comprehensive and concise records of all aspects of patient care. Maintains essential knowledge of general disease and pathologic processes. Revises the plan of care to meet the changing needs of the patient. Consistently maintains high productivity according to identified clinical standards. Leads/participates in projects to improve productivity and quality outcomes. Appropriately performs medical procedures consistent with departmental guidelines, privileging, and clinical roles/responsibilities.

  2. Teaching – Appropriately and professionally educates clients and/or families regarding medical condition, treatment, and follow-up. Collaborates with clinicians, staff, and students to promote continuity and patient/family centered care. Provides instruction to APPs, physicians, physician residents, nursing, ancillary staff, and/or students including precepting, shadowing, lectures, training classes, CE, rounds, morning report, and or staff meetings.

  3. Professionalism - Interacts with patients and families in a respectful, courteous, and timely fashion using appropriate communication for the patient and situation. Interacts collaboratively with coworkers, other team members and staff in a respectful, courteous, and timely fashion appropriate to patient care needs and situations. Responds quickly to meet customer needs and resolve problems. Accepts responsibility for outcomes of one’s work. Shares responsibility for overall workload with team members. Recognizes and participates in identification and achievement of self-learning needs. Attends education programs based on identified learning needs and as detailed in the program curriculum.

  4. Quality/Research- Engages in continuous quality improvement by identifying and implementing processes for improvement. Consults with management in assessment, problem-solving, decision-making, and evaluating clinical/system issues and models of care. Participates in interdisciplinary teams to provide integrated delivery of patient care services. Initiates and revises protocol(s) or guideline(s) to reflect evidence-based changes in care management. Works to influence policy-making bodies to improve patient care. Participates in new clinical programs or services within the department/unit/clinic to improve patient care.

Education Requirements:

  • Graduation from an accredited PA (Physician Assistant) or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) academic program.

Licensure/Certification Requirements:

  • Eligible for unencumbered license to practice as a PA or APRN in North Carolina.

  • Hold national certification as a PA or APRN.

Professional Experience Requirements:

  • None required.

  • Management strongly prefers APP candidates to have Acute Care NP or PA experience.

  • Management strongly prefers APP candidates to have previous cardiology/cardiothoracic surgery experience.
