What you will do.

ATS technicians are trained to provide quality maintenance on our growing fleet of over-the-road trucks and trailers. You'll perform a variety of work including, inspecting, diagnosing, replacing and repairing brake systems ABS, electrical components, steering systems, multi-axle alignments, hydraulic systems, welding/fabrication of steel and aluminum and related equipment. You'll work independently while being part of a great team!

What does it take to be an ATS Technician?

The Trailer Technician Level 3 is responsible for the inspection, service, repair and preventative maintenance of the various types of ATS owned trailers by using ATS and industry standard methods and criteria to ensure the trailer is safe to be on the road. Functions of this position include: inspecting, diagnosing, replacing and repairing brake systems ABS, electrical components, steering systems, multi-axle alignments, hydraulic systems, welding / fabrication of steel and aluminum and related equipment

Education and Experience

  • A minimum 1 to 3 years of equivalent experience in related field e.g., automotive, medium/heavy equipment, trailer repair, etc. and experience in cutting and welding is preferred.

  • Good working Knowledge of DOT regulations and Out of Service parameters for tractors, trailers and accessorial equipment.

  • Good working knowledge of trailer maintenance and diagnostic software.

  • A valid driver’s license, Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is preferred but not required.

  • Must be able to operate all related shop equipment.

  • Must be DOT certified and forklift certified, or able to demonstrate through on the job inspections and certified by the ATS trainer within 90 days of hire if work experience is applicable.

  • Good communications skills (written, verbal, listening).

  • An understanding of basic computer operations.

  • Good decision-making, problem-solving, attention to detail and customer service skills (internal/external).

  • Competent in using computers including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook).

  • Good electrical troubleshooting skills.

  • Ability to read installation manuals and understand manufacturer training.

  • Working knowledge of proper procedures for handling and disposal of hazardous waste materials.

Diagnostics Level 3

  • With consistent help from someone is mostly capable of diagnosing the problem.

  • With consistent help from someone is mostly able to find the root cause of each problem.

  • Without occasional help is capable of diagnosing some problems on some systems.

  • Mostly able to look up and follow most manufacturing diagnostic steps.

  • Able to use most personal and shop tools to aid with diagnostics.

  • Able to use some diagnostic tools for most manufactures.

  • Without occasional help able to look into vehicle past records and reports to always successfully diagnose a problem.

Communication

A Level 3 technician can properly explain Complaint, Cause, and Correction so leadership, coworkers, warranty, and drivers can understand most aspects of the problem, cause of the problem, and what was done to fix the problem. Communication of where they are at in the process of the repair will be known. Communication will always be open and transparent to coworkers and leadership.

Warranty submission

A level 3 technician will frequently need help from leadership, parts department, or the warranty department to successfully submit warranty claims. This is followed up with a successful repair, part documentation, and data collection.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform inspections on incoming (Safety Lane) and outgoing company owned trailers using ATS, DOT, and OSHA guidelines to ensure the trailer is operating safely and efficiently.

  • Complete DOT inspections on outgoing trailers to verify that all necessary repairs have been made.

  • Ensure safety procedures are implemented and followed and PPE is used at all times.

  • Move tractors and trailers in and out of the shop for maintenance.

  • Inspect and perform all minor and major trailer maintenance including welding, tire replacement, pressure checks, brakes, lights, and safety equipment and submits reports indicating condition of equipment.

  • Weld metal to repair parts or fabricate replacement parts.

  • Open repair orders and charge out all parts used on trucks and trailers.

  • Participate in online OEM training.

  • Remain technically proficient in all areas of the shop including trailer, tire, and basic parts.

  • Utilize appropriate resources, such as the parts manual and computer, service bulletins and other resources to research problems, determine most effective and efficient method for repair.

  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement and take appropriate actions, recommend process changes, and initiate improvements.

  • Be a positive role model for all team members providing support and enthusiasm – creating a professional, positive work environment.

  • Meet level 3 standard time rating (85%+)

  • Meet level 3 rework frequency (<=3 per year)

  • Meet level 3 Quality Assurance Performance (90-95%)

  • Perform shop clean up and housekeeping responsibilities as well as other miscellaneous related duties as assigned.

  • Must furnish basic tools and ATS will provide specialty tools to perform functions of the position.

  • Meet all ATS and department objectives and deadlines.

  • Follow all ATS and department policies and procedures.

  • Work within budget that is set for the department.

  • Position may require work responsibilities outside of normal business hours including Saturday shifts, and infrequent travel may be required.

  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Specific Job Related Tasks and Capabilities

  • Be able to perform PM / DOT inspections on your own, and be fully capable of finding all needed repairs on the equipment to bring it to ATS and DOT standards.

  • Good understanding of the VM Task system and possess a sound understanding of building a repair plan for each trailer worked on by using appropriate Standard Jobs for the repairs needed.

  • Will be DOT and Forklift Certified or be able to be certified within 90 days of hire.

  • Demonstrate ability and understanding lighting systems. Can diagnose all lighting wiring issues with limited help and make the repairs to ATS and DOT standards.

  • Demonstrate good knowledge of the ABS systems and how to TS and repair various issues within them. Have a good understanding of the ABS software systems for diagnostics. May need some help depending upon complexity of the system.

  • Will become brake inspection certified within 90 days of hire. Able to demonstrate a good understanding and ability on how to replace brakes, wheel seals, S-Cams, Chambers… etc. Will have performed brake, wheel seal, S-Cam… etc. replacement on various trailers and can perform this procedure without help from anyone and done to ATS and DOT specs.

  • Will become Tire Certified and have a solid understanding of the tire program and demonstrated on the floor through your work day.

  • CCC- Will have good written and communication skills and have all the proper information based upon the task.

  • Expected to follow Safety SOP’s as well as all other documented SOP’s posted on the ATS intranet.

  • Able to demonstrate IDRIVE values at all times. Adheres to company expectations and policies.

  • Is proficient on how to torch, weld and use a plasma cutter. Will be able to weld both Mild Steel and Aluminum. (Some training still may be needed on Aluminum) Able to weld repair stake pockets, rub rails, bumpers and non-structural trailer components with some guidance and will satisfy our quality repair standards.

  • Will possess basic knowledge of Hydraulic systems and wireless steer systems. Can diagnose and repair these systems on both Tridec and Lodar on their own using resources posted on the intranet or schematics.

  • Will possess basic knowledge of the trailer air systems. Be able to diagnose and make repairs and re-plumb trailer air systems and may need frequent help.

  • Is learning and seeking knowledge to further skills to work on larger equipment outside normal daily duties such as: 3 axle RGN’s, 4 Axle RGN’s and specialty equipment. When asked, is willing to work on such trailers under guidance but will possess the basic skills to make most typical repairs.

  • May possess skills and knowledge to perform basic small gas engine repairs and be able to diagnoses basic hydraulic systems on multi axle trailers and blade trailers. May need minimal guidance on how to operate and make repairs.

  • Is learning and seeking knowledge to further skills to perform accident damage repairs including full rear end replacements, axle and boogie box swaps, side-rail and cross member repairs….etc. When asked, is willing to work on such trailers under guidance but will possess the basic skills to make most typical repairs.

Must be able to move/position parts, tools equipment:

  • From 1 to 10 lbs. Frequently

  • From 11 to 25 lbs. frequently

  • From 25 to 50 lbs. occasionally

  • Over 50 lbs. occasionally

Exposure to:

  • Loud noises constantly requiring hearing protection.

  • Temperature extremes intermittently due to outside weather conditions.

  • Dirt, dust, grease, chemicals and odors constantly.

  • Situations requiring eye protection and steel toed boots and when welding, an approved shield.

Compensation & Benefits:

  • The anticipated hourly pay range for this position is between $24.00 - $29.00 plus $4/hr. 2nd Shift differential. This position may be eligible for a $2000.00 sign-on bonus, subject to eligibility requirements. Hourly pay rate offered is determined by relevant experience, education, certifications, and geographic location as compared to others doing substantially similar work. In addition to the hourly rate of pay, employees may be eligible for performance-based incentives, which can vary depending on individual and/or company performance.
