Your Opportunity

Our Mining group has a need for a Mechanical Supervisor based out of our Chandler, AZ, Salt Lake City, UT, or Denver, CO offices. This role directly supervises the US mining structural team consisting of around 10 engineers and designers focused on Piping & Pumping and Material Handling systems as well as related system layouts (i.e. General Arrangements). The primary responsibilities would be to develop and take care of the people on your team and to promote a culture of safety, quality, collaboration, and efficiency.

  • You will work with a team of engineers and designers in the planning and execution of project work, including scoping, asset assessments, as-built documentation, feasibility studies, and detailed engineering. You will provide technical support to procurement and during construction and commissioning.

  • Ensure all applicable safety codes, regulations and guidelines are met by appropriate design and use of technology.

  • Ensure drawings are reviewed for possible safety and constructability improvement opportunities prior to issue to clients.

  • Be a servant leader and lead by example.

  • You will provide clients with engineering support to meet their needs and incorporate client suggestions for future requirements in a timely, efficient, and cost-effective manner. This includes attending client meetings, which may at times be remote, as well as corresponding directly with the client.

  • You will regularly interface with other disciplines and departments to execute projects.

  • Facilitate multi-discipline engineering project progression by completing designs that provide other disciplines (such as electrical and structural) required inputs in order for other disciplines to complete their designs.

  • You will be responsible for the review and analysis of drawings for possible safety and constructability problems prior to issuance to clients.

  • Resource allocation, forecasting and coordination with Project Managers, other Discipline Supervisors and the Discipline Engineering Manager to ensure projects are staffed with the right people.

  • Focus on building an internal network and meet regularly with leaders from other internal groups with an emphasis on balancing team workload, skillsets, and project cost optimization.

  • Identification of specific recruitment needs and involvement in the hiring process including orientation and on boarding of new hires.

  • Work with each team member to support them in their career development including performance management as required. Communicate expectations to direct reports and measure performance.

  • Ensure active coaching, training and mentoring of team members.

  • Champion the development of procedures, checklists, guides, etc. related to improving quality and efficiency.

  • Facilitate and ensure project setup and proper senior involvement at early stages of planning, project setup and execution.

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Experience demonstrating supervisory skills and leadership abilities.

  • Self-starter with ability to work independently.

  • Ability to lead execution of mechanical discipline scope on projects.

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, along with excellent interpersonal abilities and a willingness to work in a team atmosphere, including involvement in technical business development.

  • Excellent knowledge of applicable design codes (ASME B31, API650, IPC, UBC, ASHRAE, SMACNA, etc) and familiarity with Mine Health and Safety Regulations.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills and project engineering experience.

  • Ability to take the lead on a project team.

  • Willingness to travel to client sites or other Stantec offices (10% travel).

Education and Experience

  • A Professional Engineering license in the State of Arizona, or the ability to obtain an Arizona license through comity or NCEES record. Licensure or the ability to obtain licenses in other states such as Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, and Nevada as needed.

  • 10 years of engineering, design, and construction experience in heavy industry, particularly surface or underground mining.

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering

The following capabilities would be an asset:

  • Previous experience as a Lead Engineer on detailed engineering/construction projects with a consulting firm or Owner’s team.

  • Experience and knowledge of mining clients.

  • Previous experience in:

    • Design, specification, and installation supervision of surface mine processing plants, including milling, refining, and/or smelting operations
    • Design, specification, and installation supervision of underground mine systems and facilities
    • Mine dewatering
    • Pumps
    • Compressors
    • Pressure piping/pumping applications, including slurries
    • Copper solution mining and/or SX/EW processing
    • Brownfield condition assessments, commissioning, and/or operations support
    • Material handling experience is a plus

Pay transparency laws require employers to provide the following information for positions that may be in the following jurisdiction(s):

Salary Range(s):

  • $114,400 - $171,600 Min/Max Pay Range for postings located in CO and HI and MD

The final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible.
