Job Summary:
The Head Groundskeeper will be responsible for the overall maintenance and beautification of the schools outdoor spaces. This includes landscaping tasks such as trimming trees, weeding, mowing, and maintaining sports fields, as well as ensuring the upkeep of irrigation systems, lawn care equipment, and clearing debris. You will play a key role in maintaining the safety and aesthetic appeal of our campus, ensuring a welcoming and well-kept environment for students, faculty, and visitors. Additionally, you will serve as the primary liaison with external vendors for outdoor maintenance contracts and will eventually lead a small team, working together to uphold the beauty and functionality of our school grounds. This position requires working at the Tempe and Chandler campus locations.
Role and Responsibilities:
- Maintains VCS grounds by cutting, mowing, edging, and trimming grass, plants, and shrubs as appropriate
- Operates various hand tools and power equipment as needed to perform duties
- Performs general cleanup of grounds and facilities including parking areas
- Removes debris, leaves, brush, and weeds from walkways, stairs, parking facilities and other areas
- Monitors and maintains the watering needs of our landscaping across all campuses
- Promotes and adheres to all recognized safety practices and standards
- Contributes to the beautification of the VCS campus by offering his or her expertise in landscaping design
- Works with any third-party contractors to ensure that VCS standards for outdoor common areas are met
- Oversees the landscaping budget
- Communicates with stakeholders including campus principals in a professional and expeditious manner
- Attends staff and departmental meetings as required
- Adheres to Valley Christian policies, procedures/processes and codes
- Performs other related assigned duties
Requirements
Qualifications and Skills:
- Must have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ that serves as a consistent testimony to others
- Faithfully attend and financially support a local church that shares our schools beliefs
- Must possess intermediate to advanced gardening knowledge
- Must have a positive attitude with a strong work ethic
- Must possess a drivers license and be eligible to operate school vehicles using school insurance
- Must be able to operate a computer and related software applications
- Must be able to work independently of others but also be a team player willing to help out on special projects
- Must have and maintain a valid level one IVP fingerprint card
- Ability to communicate effectively both written and verbally
- Basic proficiency in English is required to effectively perform job duties, including communication with staff, students, and vendors.
- Ability to problem solve and demonstrate sound judgment
Education and Experience Requirements:
- High school diploma or GED; and any experience and training which provides the knowledge and ability to perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above
Preferred Skills and Knowledge
- Prior experience preferred
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to work prolonged periods of time outdoors
This position requires ver heavy work exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects and using safety measures to do so
May be subjected to moving mechanical parts, vibrations, fumes, odors, dust, poor ventilation, etc.
Able to remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) 50% of the time
Requires stooping, bending, turning, pushing, pulling, reaching and climbing stairs (2-story) and use of hands, fingers, arms to reach, grip and maneuver objects
Continual walking throughout the campuses
Must be able to respond quickly to sounds (fire/security alarms)
Ability to work in noisy and crowded school environment
Able to remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) 50% of the time
