Now Hiring - Traveling Heavy Equipment Operator

Job Description

  • Seeking an experienced Heavy Equipment Operator with a focus in utility operations

  • The ideal candidate will have significant experience operating mini excavators and other heavy equipment for trenching and utility work

  • John Deere 50, 60, 85 and 135

  • Takeuchi TB290

  • Cat 305, 310 & 315

  • We typically work in Ohio, PA, VA, TN, AL, KY, MD

Responsibilities

  • Operate heavy equipment, including mini excavators and skid steers, to dig trenches and perform utility work

  • Take daily instructions directly from the Superintendent

  • Perform pre-operation inspections to ensure proper equipment startup and operation

  • Maintain a safe working environment, wearing all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and following health and safety regulations, including OSHA and MSHA standards

  • Coordinate machine actions with other activities, responding to hand or audio signals from crew members

  • Avoid potential hazards or obstructions, such as utility lines, other equipment, or other workers

  • Assist the crew with labor tasks when not operating equipment

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Essential Skills

  • 5-10 years of heavy equipment operation experience, specifically in fiber optic conduit construction

  • Proficiency with mini excavators, skid steers, backhoes, and front-end loaders

  • Ability to dig 48” deep trenches with a production rate of at least 600 feet per day

  • Capability to backfill trenches without crushing conduits and complete final restoration to meet permitting requirements

  • Experience in utility construction, particularly with fiber optic projects

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with solar projects

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet daily production goals

  • Comfortable working outdoors in extreme temperature conditions and on uneven ground

  • Willingness to travel frequently and work in multiple states

  • Ability to work 60 hours per week, with mandatory overtime

Work Environment

  • This position involves working in a construction environment, all outdoors, and may require handling extreme temperature conditions

  • The job is fast-paced with daily production goals and involves working 6 days a week, with overtime pay after 40 hours

  • Travel is a must, with projects located in multiple states

  • Depending on the distance from PA, you may come home every week or follow a 12 on, 4-5 off schedule

  • The work is physically demanding, requiring comfort with walking on uneven ground

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $35.00/hr.
