Bowman has an opportunity for a Structural Engineer I, Ports & Harbors to join our team in any of the following locations: FL (Melbourne, Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers, Pensacola, Sunrise & Tampa), TX (Houston), CA (San Diego & San Gabriel Valley), GA (Suwanee & John's Creek), NJ (Parsippany), NY (Troy), VA (Richmond & Virginia Beach), MD (Baltimore), PA (Chadds Ford) & SC (Charleston).

Purpose

Assist in the analysis, design, and inspection of waterfront and heavy industrial engineering projects that are broad and varied in nature, requiring application of technical codes, standards, and guidelines .Learn and contribute towards the design of a variety of above and below water structures comprised of heavy industrial steel, concrete, and/or timber in both shallow and deep-water foundations.

Responsibilities

Leadership and Direction

  • Receive general instruction on key objectives for execution. Receive direction as needed, and especially on difficult assignments and possible solutions. Work is completed using standard engineering techniques and design principles and is reviewed by more senior staff to ensure application of sound professional judgement.

At the Operational and Company Level

  • Work closely with more senior project team members to learn about and participate in civil/structural engineering work.

Do the Work

  • Evaluate, select, and apply standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria on moderately complex projects.

  • Complete engineering design and drawing work using computer aided software.

  • Assist with preparing reports and correspondence concerning the direction of assigned projects.

  • Perform feasibility studies, structural planning, detailed design work, permitting and bidding on a variety of waterfront heavy industrial structures.

  • Conduct frequent visits to or may be placed on project sites to monitor construction, assist with construction and structural site inspections, and make assessments. Prepare inspection reports.

  • May perform office construction administrative duties such as reviewing drawings and technical submittals.

  • Assist in resolving design problems that may include performing field investigations or inspections, detailed design work, and detailed checking of design computations or coordination of specific design aspects into a project.

  • Review plans and prepare or review technical specifications, contract documents, and estimates.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering or related engineering discipline required at time of employment.

  • Master's degree in structural engineering a plus.

  • Entry level position, no experience required.

  • Prior industry experience, preferably working in marine infrastructure (ports, harbors, etc.) a plus.

  • E.I.T. registration preferred.

  • Professional registration a plus.

  • Experience with computer applications and engineering design software such as MicroStation, AutoCAD, STAAD, or Revit as well as Microsoft Office.

  • Familiar with ASCE, AISC, ACI, AWS, and other relevant marine, port, and coastal construction and structural design codes, standards, regulations, and compliance practices.

  • Basic understanding of construction plans.

  • Successful completion of background check, safety training, non-DOT pre-employment and random post-employment drug screening.

  • Valid state driver's license and ability to successfully complete a motor vehicle records check ("MVR") OR a reliable form of transportation to/from office and/or project site(s) preferred.

Physical Demands and Working Environment

  • Primarily indoor professional office environment which may include bright/dim light, noise, fumes, odors, and traffic.

  • Mobility around an office environment.

  • Frequent and prolonged use of standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

  • Occasional outdoor work environment which may include adverse weather conditions, varying temperatures, excessive noise, and/or potential hazards.

  • Mobility around a job/construction site to include walking, bending, crawling, climbing, squatting, or kneeling and wearing of required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

  • Primarily local travel during the business day, although some out-of-the-area and overnight travel may be required according to the needs of the business.

  • Occasional lifting or carrying up to 20 pounds.

  • Occasional pushing or pulling up to 20 pounds.

  • Occasional reaching outward or above shoulder.
