Cedar Falls Utilities Electric Engineering Intern in Cedar Falls, Iowa

Overview

This opportunity is for engineering students to apply their engineering studies, receive hands-on experience, and work side-by-side with experienced professionals on challenging engineering projects with exposure to all areas of power supply. We have opportunities for Electrical, Mechanical, Power Generation, Transmission and Distribution. The hours for this position is 40 hours per week. The term for the position is expected to coincide with the typical summer break for college students. The intern works under direction of the Power Plant Manager and Electrical Substation & Metering Manager.

Responsibilities

  • Performs thermal scanning of overhead electric distribution equipment, prepare reports, and work orders for repairs.

  • Assists electrical engineering technician with various substation projects.

  • Assists power plant electricians/technicians with various generation projects.

  • Assists electric planning department with engineering calculations as needed.

  • Assists electric distribution engineer with engineering studies.

  • Verifies field equipment for accuracy of mapping for drafting department.

  • Supports a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner that promotes positive relations with customers, co-workers and management.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Electrical Engineering student at an accredited Engineering University.

    Experie nce:

  • Electrical or utility experience preferred.

    Certifications/License(s):

  • Must possess and maintain a valid drivers license and meet CFU insurability guidelines.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge Mathematics, Electric Circuit Theory/Electric Power.

  • Skilled in using a laptop computer, Windows OS, and Microsoft Office Applications.

  • Ability to r ead and comprehend basic electrical drawings and schematics; quickly learn how to use electrical tools such as multi-meters, thermal cameras, relay test equipment, and battery test meters; use software related to test equipment and other engineering modeling software.

    Physical Tasks and Environmental Conditions:

  • The work is split between an office setting and field work which may expose the individual to outdoor hazards, including uneven terrain and inclement weather conditions. There is frequent need to stand, stoop, walk, sit, use hands to finger, lift objects (up to 50 pounds) and perform other similar actions during the course of the workday. Safety equipment such as hard hat, leather gloves, safety toe boots and high visibility vests will be required and/or provided. Employee accommodations for physical or mental disabilities will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Occasional use of a CFU vehicle will be required.

    Pre-employment drug screen and physical is required.
