About Our Organization
Cedar Falls Utilities is a thriving municipal utility provider and operates on a not-for-profit basis for public benefit in the community of Cedar Falls, Iowa. CFU plays an integral role in making Cedar Falls a great place to live and work. CFU operates four separate enterprises offering electricity, natural gas, water, high-speed internet, TV and telephone services to its customers.
Cedar Falls Utilities is governed by a five-person Board of Trustees. Trustees are residents of Cedar Falls and appointed by the Mayor and City Council to six-year terms. Each Trustee has the responsibility to represent the interests and needs of the Utilities’ customers balanced to the best interests of the Utilities. This is accomplished through the hiring and overseeing of the General Manager/CEO of the Utilities. The Board provides the necessary guidelines and authorizations for the work of the General Manger/CEO via governance policies. Cedar Falls Utilities employs an average of 195 employees. American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), Local 3576 union represents 35% of the workforce.
About the Position
Under general direction from the General Manager/CEO, the Director of Customer Service & Business Development serves as a visionary for the organization and provides oversightand direction in the areas of Customer Service, Energy Services, Marketing, Sales, and Business Development.
The Director serves as a strategic partner identifying opportunities for business growth and maintaining a high level of customer satisfaction. The Director serves as a leader to four management team members, including the Marketing Manager, Communications Sales Manager, Customer Service Manager, and Energy Services Manager.
Key responsibilities include setting business strategy for functional areas, providing operational leadership, building a pipeline for new products and services, developing effective relationships with key accounts and building a high-performance team while exemplifying CFU’s Core Values. Demonstrated abilities to forge relationships with key partners, maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders, and deliver optimum business outcomes is critical to the success of the position.

Compensation & Benefits
Salaried, FLSA exempt position. Starting wage is based upon individual qualifications. Pay Range is $155,120 - $212,740.
Travel is required to attend conferences and meetings.

Responsibilities
Develop objectives, plans and specific activities to be pursued in each area of responsibility described in the CFU Strategic Plan; makes strategic and operational recommendations that concern customer and energy service, marketing and sales, and business development; sets organizational marketing strategy for the organization.
Research industry updates through professional journals, news sources, internet and market research data reports and provides the department and general manager with innovative products and services to increase company revenue.
Negotiate and administer key contracts and agreements; responsible for business development and commercial sales and service; responsible for Cable TV content, TV Programming agreements, communications sales, and marketing.
Responsible for organizational marketing strategy and education of the public in utility, customer service and energy matters; responsible to position CFU in the community as a trusted provider of essential services.
Develop and lead the vision for customer service and customer experience; Responsible for building a superior service organization exceeding customer expectations, overseeing the management of customer accounts and customer issues.
Lead CFU and our customers to meet our strategic energy goals and priorities utilizing energy efficiency, customer distributed energy resources, and demand side management programs.
Plan for current and future workforce needs to ensure that each department has the staffing and resources necessary to meet its short and long-term goals and objectives.
Lead and manage projects across multiple depart ments to promote teamwork, customer service initiatives, and strategic goals for CFU.
Maintain a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner that promotes positive relations with customers, co-workers and management.
Qualifications
Distinguishing Characteristics:

Qualifications:
Education: A bachelor’s degree in business administration, marketing, accounting, engineering or related field required.
Experience: Ten years of work experience in the Utility industry involved with contract administration, key account management and business development with at least five years serving in a leadership capacity.
Knowledge:Principles and methods for sales and marketing, business and management techniques used for strategic planning, resource allocation, effective leadership styles and coordination of people; Financial and Accounting principles and practices, how to assess and analyze financial information;knowledge of Economics and how changes may impact the Utility; CFU products, policies and procedures; regulations concerning customer rights; and competencies related to marketing products and services.
Ability to:Effectively lead people, make quick decisions when necessary and utilize problem- solving techniques; carry out work assignments as instructed; multi-task and maintain positive employee relations; establish and maintain cooperative work relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Physical Requirements: Work involves sedentary to light work in an office setting. There is frequent need to stand, stoop, walk, sit, lift objects (up to 10 pounds) and perform other similar actions during the course of the workday.
