The Opportunity

This role is for Assistant Vice President - Data Engineer & Architect in our Global Data and Analytics organization.

We are in search of a seasoned and strategic-minded data engineer to support data modernization efforts globally at MetLife. In this role, you will leverage your strong technical expertise in data engineering, data platforms, analytics, technology design and architecture to simplify, modernize our data ecosystem while enabling data for AI and self-service across MetLife. Your expertise will be instrumental in driving efficiencies, reducing complexity, and enhancing interoperability across our data systems and platforms. This role demands a strategic thinker with a knack for collaborating with diverse stakeholders, influencing decision-making, and delivering pragmatic solutions.

How You’ll Help Us Build a Confident Future (Key Responsibilities)

  • Act as a subject matter expert with strong technical knowledge and understanding of the core concepts behind Cloud data platforms, open-source data frameworks, BI/Analytics, Data Warehousing, Data Lake, ETL etc.

  • Lead the architecture, design, development, and deployment of cutting-edge solutions to support a modern scalable data ecosystem, as well as emerging Generative AI technologies.

  • Provide oversight and collaborating on data pipeline implementations to ensure governance, quality, and observability.

  • Technical guidance and mentorship of team members including conducting code reviews and supporting the building prototypes and proof of concepts.

  • Work closely with the wider product and engineering leadership team to develop simplification and modernization product and platform roadmaps, championing scalability and performance.

  • Develop pragmatic solutions addressing immediate needs while laying foundation for long term goals.

  • Stay updated with the latest industry trends and emerging technologies.

What You Need to Succeed (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, or related field

  • 15+ years of experience designing, building and supporting large scale modern data platforms in Big data on Prem & Cloud. Strong SQL, Scala and Python experience

  • 7+ years’ experience with Distributed data / computing tools (Hadoop, Hive, Databricks/Synapse spark, Kafka) and real-time data and streaming applications (Event hubs, Azure Functions etc)

  • 5+ years’ experience developing NoSQL-based data solutions, preferably Cosmos DB

  • Experience designing, implementing and deploying ETL/ELT pipelines, data lake house (medallion) architectures and metadata driven frameworks.

  • Expert level knowledge in cloud computing platforms such as Azure

  • Strong data migration experience, including automation and tooling

  • Experience developing and deploying Machine Learning (ML) models

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral with the ability to articulate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders internally and externally.

  • Influencing key stakeholders (CIO, Business, DnA) to achieve business goals and align to the overall data strategy.

  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically, prioritize initiatives based on business impact, and drive execution in alignment with organizational objectives.

What Can Give You an Edge (Additional Skills)

  • Knowledge and experience in generative AI and RAG architectures

  • Experience in data governance tools such as Unity Catalog or Purview
