Description

This is a FLSA non-exempt, part-time position, with the Public Works Department located in Carson City, Nevada.Under immediate supervision, provides a variety of maintenance and operations duties at the Carson City Landfill. Hours may vary up to 40 hours per week and may include occasional overtime, not to exceed 1,039 working hours in a fiscal year (July 1 - June 30).

Examples of Duties

This class specification lists the major duties and requirements of the job and is not all-inclusive. Incumbent(s) may be expected to perform job-related duties other than those contained in this document and may be required to have specific job-related knowledge and skills.

  • Operates water truck to perform dust control.
  • Performs daily vehicle and equipment inspections and checklists.
  • Maintains vehicles, equipment and facilities in a clean, functional operating condition.
  • Performs site and facility clean up including gathering windblown trash and debris.
  • Performs Landfill Gate Attendant duties such as directing customers to appropriate dump sites, data entry, collecting fees and operating standard office equipment.
  • May operate other heavy equipment such as a front loader, bulldozer, grader, excavator, haul truck or compactor depending on knowledge, skill and abilities.
  • Follows safe working practices.
  • Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit's service to its customers by offering suggestions and directing or participating as a member of a work team.
  • Maintains basic records such as work performed and time sheets.
  • Demonstrates courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with the public and staff; acts in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment.
Typical Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Education and Experience: High school diploma or GED; heavy equipment operation experience desired; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by Human Resources.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS:

  • Nevada Class C Driver's license

Required Knowledge and Skills Knowledge of:

  • Business arithmetic.
  • Safety policies and practices.
  • Record keeping principles and practices.
  • Heavy equipment operations and maintenance is highly desirable.

Skill in:

  • Performing basic mathematical calculations.
  • Performing assigned duties in a safe manner.
  • Following oral and written instructions.
  • Performing a variety construction, maintenance and cleaning tasks.
  • Contributing effectively to the accomplishment of team or work unit goals, objectives and activities.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective work relationships with staff, coworkers, contractors and the public.
  • Operating and maintaining heavy equipment is highly desirable.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED: Under Immediate Supervision- Incumbents at this level are closely supervised in essentially all aspects of their assigned work with the exception of routine and basic tasks. Work methods are generally prescribed in specific terms. They usually follow an established routine with general assignments, and their work i subject to frequent reviews. A position may involve repetition of a limited number of tasks that after initial training and review warrant only occasional supervisory review.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS and WORKING ENVIRONMENT: The physical demands described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. Mobility to work in a field setting, use standard office equipment and stamina to sit and walk for extended periods of time; agility to navigate uneven terrain; strength to lift and carry up to 80 pounds; work at height up to seventy-five (75) feet; vision to read printed materials; and hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone; work is subject toexposure to weather conditions, fumes, dust and hazardous chemicals.

Employees must maintain an active telephone, be willing to work overtime, shifts, weekends and holidays.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  1. This is an at-will position. An employee may be discharged at any time for any reason or no reason. The number of hours worked in a fiscal year are not guaranteed, however, they cannot exceed 1039 hours. The fiscal year begins on July 1st and ends June 30th.

``` 2. Continued employment is contingent upon all required licenses and certificates being maintained in active status without suspension or revocation.

``` 3. Any City employee may be required to stay at or return to work during emergencies. This may require working a non-traditional work schedule or working outside normal assigned duties during the incident and/or emergency.

``` 4. New employees are required to submit to a fingerprint-based background investigation which cost the new employee $48.25 and a drug screen which costs $36.50. Employment is contingent upon passing the background and the drug screen.

Carson City participates in E-Verify and will provide the Social Security Administration (SSA) and, if necessary, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS, with information from each applicant's Form I-9 to confirm work authorization.
