City of Carmel Communications Technician I in Carmel, Indiana

The purpose of this position is to perform technical functions associated with the installation, repair and maintenance of electronic and communication systems for the Carmel Clay Communications Center and for other City departments as required.

Essential Job Functions:

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Installs, maintains, diagnoses, repairs, programs and evaluates electronic equipment and communications systems, including closed circuit television system, alarm access control system, voice mail system, radio communication system, telephone system, fiber optic network system, televisions, AV Systems, computers, monitors, printers, modems, radar speed detection systems, public address systems and tornado sirens.
  • Performs maintenance on backup systems at Data Center, including radio systems, Doppler weather alert system, alarm systems, AV Systems and electrical power systems.
  • Inspects, tests and monitors machinery, AV equipment and parts for proper operations; makes routine adjustments, repairs or replacements; reports problem situations.
  • Performs various manual tasks associated with department activities, which may include installing antennas, installing or removing telephone lines, running communicationAV cables and maintaining Data Center and Tower site buildings.
  • Performs general maintenance of computer/AV systems, such as troubleshooting computer/AV problems, installing or replacing AV hardware and software, backing up data.

Non-essential Job Functions:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to collect, review and analyze data.
  • Ability to utilize a variety of reference, descriptive, advisory and design data and information to make technical decisions.
  • Ability to exercise discretion in identifying and selecting from alternative courses of action.
  • Ability to communicate effectively; includes abilityto interact with members of the department and other City departments to exchange information and resolve problems.
  • Ability to perform moderately complex algebraic and geometric operations; ability to read charts, graphs and schematics.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer utilizing word processing, spreadsheet, database management, presentation, communications, operating system, internet and other software applications as may be necessary to perform essential job functions.
  • Ability to utilize a variety of tools, equipment and supplies associated with emergency 9-1-1 and public safety technical operations, including voltage and amp meters, telephone and radio repair equipment, radar certification equipment, electrical tools, mechanic tools and power drills and saws.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle to conduct work activities.
  • Ability to respond to 24-hour call-out.
  • Ability to work some nights and weekends to accommodate schedules of 24/7 public safety operations.
  • Ability to exert heavy physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials weighing 21-50 pounds.
  • Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as wetness, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, electric currents, toxic agents, disease or pathogenic substances.

Qualifications Required to Perform Essential Job Functions

  • Associates degree in electronics engineering, electrical engineering or related field; bachelors degree preferred.
  • One (1) year of experience that includes electrical or electronic maintenance and computer operations.
  • Or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the requisite knowled e, skills and abilities for this position.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Indiana drivers license.
