Ohio Gratings Inc Tool & Die Technician in Canton, Ohio

SUMMARY: The Tool and Die Technician will plan and execute new stamping die builds in the 50-250 ton range utilizing a small team of tool makers and apprentices. These dies could range from a single hit manual load unit to a coil fed progressive. This person will also need to work with existing dies and troubleshoot in press problems as needed. This person must be able to recognize roadblocks in a new die build and work to close tolerances when required. This position will also support repair items, reverse engineering of legacy components, and serve as a mentor to junior team members. Additionally, the Technician will handle tool and die repair tasks, ensuring tools and dies are maintained and repaired efficiently to minimize downtime.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Plan and coordinate new die and tooling builds.
  • Collaborate with tool design to create Bill of Material (BOM) for new builds.
  • Identify press tooling that is obsolete or at end of life cycle to plan remaking the die.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose in press stamping problems.
  • Identify design improvement opportunities for existing dies.
  • Direct work assignments and participate in the review process of your team.
  • Support die setters in setup and new tooling tryout.
  • Train new tool makers and/or apprentices on correct trade standards.
  • Operate tool room equipment as needed for new tooling and repair items.
  • Perform tool and die repair tasks to ensure tools and dies are functional and safe.
  • Comply with all operating procedures, instructions, and safety rules.
  • Communicate effectively and serve as the subject matter expert for tooling and die issues.
  • Recognize and report all quality issues as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervision.

EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE, AND PROFICIENCIES:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Completion of Tool and Die Apprenticeship, 2-year Associates Degree, or 10 or more years in toolmaking, die repair, or a combination of schooling and experience.
  • Extensive tool and die knowledge in progressive and single hit dies.
  • Familiarity with tool room process flow and project deadlines.
  • Ability to reverse engineer detail components without part prints.
  • Understands heat treatment, tool steel selections, and basic metallurgy.
  • Ability to read and interpret design blueprints.
  • Strong attention to detail and in press troubleshooting.
  • Ability to work independently or in a team environment.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects.
  • Ability to work after-hours if required.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is encountered with repetitive movement tasks, which requires the employee to stand, walk, stoop, bend, reach, grasp, push, and pull grating material of various sizes and weights for long periods of time. Must regularly lift or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 75 pounds, using proper lifting techniques, help from another employee, or other available resources such as lifting or moving equipment.
