Plant Superintendent - Camp Hill, PA

This is an exempt level position.

Position Summary:

The Plant Superintendent will coordinate and oversee day-to-day activities of the mill, bulk loading/packaging, and elevator departments at the Mendota, IL facility. This position is responsible for the safe, successful and progressive day-to-day operational activities, and a safe, sanitary workplace in compliance with company policies, government regulation and regulatory agencies (OSHA, EPA, DNR, FDA, USDA, FRA, HACCP, etc.). The Plant Superintendent supervises up to 3 department superintendents and indirectly supervises approximately 35-40 colleagues and reports to the Plant Manager.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Respond to plant, process, personnel, product, and environmental emergencies.

  • Ensure successful day-to-day operation of the plant in areas of safety, quality, and production.

  • Work closely with the plant manager to execute plant specific goals and objectives.

  • Supervise the performance of department superintendents, multi-department coverage supervisors, and provide guidance and production expectations to department superintendents.

  • Involvement with the management of policies and procedures that ensure compliance with health and safety, environmental, food safety, sanitation, quality policies, and procedures.

  • Assist in troubleshooting production problems, optimizing yields, and productivity, and controlling costs.

  • Provide leadership for colleague development as well as establishing and achieving plant goals.

  • Maintain a high degree of availability to a 24/7 operation.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering preferred, or related discipline or equivalent experience.

  • Minimum of 5 plus years production and supervisory experience

  • Demonstrated extremely strong commitment and leadership in plant health and safety program as well as quality and food safety programs.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage a food processing facility, employing GMP and HACCP methodologies.

  • Excellent communication skills – both oral and written.

  • Strong leadership, management, and interpersonal skills.

  • Interpersonal skills employed include handling conflict; motivating, instructing, and training personnel in a fair, honest, and direct way.

  • Technical competence in mechanics, instrumentation, controls, calculations, and utility systems.

  • Ability to achieve and track excellence using performance-driven metrics.

  • General computer skills including experience with MS Office.

  • Ability to effectively manage time for optimal results.

  • Able to utilize independent judgment to solve problems, have excellent organizational skills to effectively handle multiple ongoing tasks, meet deadlines, and strive for continuous improvement and high expectations of direct reports.

  • Inside areas:

  • Spring/Summer: Temperatures in some areas of the facility will be up to or exceed 100 degrees

  • Fall/Winter: Temperatures in the facility may be at or below freezing.

  • Outside areas:

  • Spring/Summer: Outside temperature may be up to or exceed 100 degrees with potential for high humidity. May be exposed to inclement weather conditions including, but not limited to, rain and wind.

  • Fall/Winter: Outside temperatures may reach freezing or below. May be exposed to inclement weather including, freezing rain, sleet, snow and wind.

  • Some manufacturing processes within the facility are highly reliant on machinery and other processing equipment and, as a result, noise levels may reach or exceed 85 decibels and require use of hearing protection for most of the work shift.

Physical Requirements:

  • Able to lift and transport materials and equipment weighing up to 30 pounds on a frequent basis, up to 50 pounds on an occasional basis and up to 55 pounds overhead.

  • Lifting or carrying of weights over 50 pounds is rare. Employees are encouraged to request assistance in lifting or carrying objects that weigh more than 50 pounds.

  • Able to traverse up to two (2) miles during the course of a work day.

  • Able to move about or to a work site by stooping, bending, kneeling or squatting frequently during the course of a work day. May require periods of prolonged sitting or standing.

  • Able to operate equipment or diagnose / detect issues of machinery that may be located at different heights. May require work on ladders, scaffolding or other work at heights.

  • Requires a full range of physical motion in order to operate manual and electrically powered tools and electrical test equipment, to move throughout the facility, including climbing stairs in all buildings, and to work at heights.
