At least fifty percent (50%) of this position is dedicated to being an advanced programmer, requiring the ability to independently create, design, and implement a variety of programs utilizing SAS programs, Linux scripts, and other statistical programming languages.

  • Expertise in advanced areas of SAS, such as macro language and ODS, as well as experience being a SAS resource and mentor for programmers and statisticians

  • Programming duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Develop and enhance universal SAS programs and BASH scripts that facilitate:

  • Data retrieval from Data Management Centers

  • Preparation of datasets for subsequent statistical analysis

  • Creation of report-ready Tables, Listings, and Figures (TLFs) for statistical reports

  • Produce professional, well-designed graphic

  • Prototype and refine large-scale programs that facilitate data manipulation and improve the user experience in organizing data for analysis

  • Write advanced Linux scripts and related guidance documents for researchers

  • Extensively test, validate, and document the efficacy of SAS program and Linux scripts to ensure they meet CDISC and CBAR requirements.

  • Produce and enhance programs to maintain and utilize metadata repositories - including CDISC, MedDRA, WHOdrug

  • According to study-specific needs:

  • Prepare datasets, including ADaMs, for subsequent statistical analysis

  • Prepare TFLs in alignment with study-specific specifications

  • Other activities as assigned (e.g., query management).

  • Act as a subject matter expert to share knowledge with statisticians, epidemiologists, and other programmers. This includes:

  • Engaging with researchers via various communication channels to troubleshoot unique, complex programming problems and general programming support

  • Educating SAS users on advanced data manipulation, programming techniques, and best practices

  • Collaborating with high-level users to implement Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)

  • Assisting with programming adjustments to follow CDISC standards

  • Participating in relevant CBAR committees with internal researchers, clinicians, and data managers to drive CBAR’s research forward

  • Mentoring and/or supervising programming personnel to increase their skills and technical acumen

  • Increasing technical knowledge by attending local and national workshops or conferences

  • Improving professional competencies by upskilling research staff through statistical programming presentations, seminars, and external events

  • Contribute to the programmer hiring process as an interviewer

  • Other duties as assigned

    This position is located in the Center for Biostatistics in AIDS Research (CBAR) within the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston, Massachusetts. Position Description: Reporting directly to the Associate Director of Statistical Programming, the Manager of Programmer Development provides leadership, mentorship, and respectful management to junior CBAR Core programmers. This role is also responsible for coordinating and overseeing study-specific programming activities of Core programmers. This role has a broad scope of work as well as the independence to conceptualize and implement tools and techniques that enhance statistical programming across networks by collaborating with researchers in an environment of mutual cooperation and respect.

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Up to fifty percent (50%) of this role is dedicated to training of new core programmers, including supervision of 1-3 Core programmers, typically for the first 1-3 years of employment at CBAR. Working with ACTG and IMPAACT leadership and statistical teams, the role maximizes engagement of Core programmers in study-specific programming activities.

For these aspects of the role, responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Develop and deploy a variety of training methods in order to enhance Core Programmers’ skills, performance, productivity, and quality of work. Working with other leaders of the Programming Core:

  • Identify and assess current and future training needs

  • Create and provide training as needed

  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the training provided

  • Collaborate with other supervisors of the Programming Core to prioritize and equitably allocate work and programming responsibilities

  • Communicate with ACTG and IMPAACT leadership and study teams to define and oversee study-specific programming projects:

  • Work with Core leadership on assignment of study-specific work in alignment with ongoing Core priorities

  • Coordinate with study team to ensure understanding of the work

  • Work with assigned programmers to ensure accurate and efficient completion of work

  • Identify opportunities to leverage Core capabilities to support study-specific work in languages other than SAS/BASH, such as R and/or Python and provide relevant training to Core programmers to support this work

  • Coordinate work load/priorities for supervisees with other leaders of the Programming Core and provide, guidance, training, and review of supervisees' assigned work:

  • Communication with Core Leadership on specifics of the work assigned

  • Attend meetings between senior programmers and supervisee(s) as needed

  • Provide training in the context of assigned tasks

  • Review of supervisees' programs and output as needed

  • Provide direction and guidance to maximize career development and advancement within CBAR for direct reports and, as needed, other members of the Core

  • Develop an overall training and development plan for incoming Core Programmers in collaboration with the Manager of Programmer Orientation

  • Collaborate with the Manager of Programmer Orientation on development and maintenance of Core Orientation materials
