City of Cambridge Assistant Food Service Manager in Cambridge, Massachusetts

The Council on Aging is the ?front door? of services and support for older residents and caregivers. The COA offers a wide range of programs, activities, classes, and social services both virtually and in person at its two senior centers. The Assistant Food Service Manager will support the Food Service Manager in ensuring the nutritional needs of older adults through the smooth operation of a congregate-based meals program and other events and programs that support the social well-being of seniors in Cambridge. A robust meals program is one of COA?s strategies to encourage older adults to gather in a safe and welcoming environment of the Senior Center. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Prepare and serve meals. Assist Food Service Manager with food preparation and cooking; also including all kitchen operations. Assist Food Service Manager to prepare and serve meals for special events, culturally based programs, and educational programs for up to 100 participants. Responsible for Set up and cleanup of refreshments and equipment for event programs, in varied locations throughout the Senior Center. Clean, sanitize, and maintain commercial kitchen equipment. Including, but not limited to, counters, tables and all dishware and utensils. Following the schedule for daily, weekly and monthly cleaning tasks. Ensure local health and safety standards are maintained; prepare the kitchen for inspection and assist local health inspectors as required. Maintain inventory. Check the quantity and quality of received products and ensure safe storage of both perishable and shelf-stable non/food items. Follow the established policy regarding safe storage of all food products safely and properly according to state and federal guidelines. Label and date all food products properly when placing them in refrigerator or freezer. Assist with food shopping at approved City vendors. Assist with menu planning. Submit paperwork as required and provide written reports to the Food Service Manager. Attend staff meetings. Actively engage in and support the Department?s Race and Equity Initiative. Other duties as assigned. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Experience and Education High school diploma and two years in the food service industry in a similar level position. Knowledge of food service and quality/quantity cooking. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Proven ability to handle multiple tasks under pressure. Demonstrated proficiency in MS Office applications. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Food safety and sanitation certification highly preferred. Experience working directly with older adults highly preferred. Experience working with diverse population highly preferred. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS, WORKING CONDITIONS, WORK FLEXIBILITY AND ACCOMODATIONS: Ability to operate industrial-sized equipment including stove, oven, convection oven, deli slicer, refrigerator, freezer, and dishwasher. A fast paced and physically small setting for preparation, cooking and serving of meals. Job requires standing and walking for a good part of the day. Stove and oven heat often affect the temperature of the kitchen area. Meals must be ready for serving at appointed times. Non-slip food service footwear is required. Ability to lift a minimum of up to 50 lbs., such as supplies, food, and equipment.
