The role you’ll contribute:
GENERAL SUMMARY:
Manages and leads the hospital Infection Control and Prevention Program for Gordon Hospital and Murray Medical Center. Designated as the individual with clinical authority over the infection control and prevention program along with responsibility for daily management activities. These responsibilities include developing and implementing policies governing control of infections and communicable diseases along with developing a system for identifying, reporting, investigating, and controlling infections and communicable diseases. Facilitates communication among all members of the healthcare team, including physicians and community agencies. Acts as a consultant to the medical staff, and hospital professional and technical staff regarding infection prevention and control measures in order to coordinate safe delivery of patient care. Plans, develops and conducts educational classes, including infection control and prevention orientation for new employees and volunteers, blood borne pathogen orientation for hospital staff in conjunction with Employee Health, infection prevention principles and isolation practices program for new nursing staff and local area nursing students. Ensures compliance with CMS, TJC, HFAP and other regulatory agencies.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES :
Surveillance of infection and management of data.
Utilizes Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Criteria to identify and evaluate selected nosocomial infections, and to differentiate between nosocomial and community acquired infections.
Collects, aggregates and analyzes nosocomial infection data. Accurately computes selected nosocomial infection rates and prepares graphic reports of these finding for the Performance Improvement Committee quarterly.
Implements or instructs staff regarding prevention measures to be implemented to contain the spread of infection or disease to patients, visitors and staff.
Reviews cases of epidemiological significant organisms. Identifies outbreaks and clusters of significant infections. Recommends control measures necessary to contain the spread of the outbreak, coordinates implementation of these measures and coordinates the formal outbreak investigation.
Reviews selected isolation cases to assess appropriateness, identify compliance issues, and identify practices that may result in the spread of infection.
Submits timely, thorough and accurate data to NHSN as outlined by regulatory agencies.
Conducts surveillance rounds, provides education and follows up on identified opportunities for improvement to ensure compliance. Notifies Director, Chief Nursing Officer, Chief of Staff, and Chief Executive Officer of unresolved identified deficiencies and/or deficiencies identified with the need for immediate action.
Coordinates activities, monitors performance and follows up on applicable areas related to TJC National Patient Safety Goals (Infection Prevention)
Facilitation and Implementation of the Peer Review process related to Infection Prevention.
Coordinates and assists with peer review performed by the Infection Prevention Physician Liaison. Drafts and distributes communications from the Infection Prevention Physician Liaison to members of the Medical Staff, hospital management staff and outside agencies as needed.
Creates and provides quarterly report for PIC on selected infection prevention indicators and provides infection rates as requested for Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluation (OPPE).
Reviews cases with epidemiologically significant organisms, identifies outbreaks and clusters and leads investigation. Identifies and manages as sentinel events all identified cases of unanticipated death or permanent loss of function associated with health care related infections in collaboration with the Quality Management Director.
Monitors established yearly infection prevention indicators based on the infection prevention/control risk assessment and Joint Commission guidelines.
Provides education and consultation regarding Infection Prevention.
Provides consultation and assistance on infection prevention matters to all departments as the need is identified and on request to ensure policies are understood and adhered to when trends or policy/procedure issues exist.
Plans, develops and conducts educational programs on infection prevention for new employees and volunteers as part of the monthly New Employee Orientation Program, including new nursing employees and new patient care techs.
Plans, develops and coordinates the annual Bloodborne Pathogens Review Program in conjunction with Employee Health.
Develops and coordinates educational programs on infection prevention principles and practices for local college nursing students.
Provides consultation to the Employee Health Department and makes recommendations regarding work restrictions for employees with infectious conditions and for those with exposure to infectious conditions.
Maintains active membership on the Environment of Care Committee, Value Analysis Committee, P & T Committee, Nursing Executive Committee and the Performance Improvement Committee and other appropriate Committees/Evidence Based Service Line Teams and serves as a consultant regarding infection prevention/control issues including purchase of new products and cleaning supplies.
Implements and monitors Infection Prevention measures regarding Construction/ Renovation.
Monitors for infection prevention/control compliance according to APIC, CDC, and AIA guidelines and attends construction meetings.
Performs/leads the process of completing the infection control risk assessment (ICRA).
Collaborates with Plant Operations to provide infection prevention education to the construction team and staff as needed.
Monitors for outbreaks of infectious disease related to construction.
Assists Director to ensure compliance with regulatory, accreditation and licensure requirements pertaining to Infection Prevention.
Responsible for assessment of compliance with regulatory standards and for implementation of action plans to maintain compliance.
Serves as liaison between the facilities and the local Public Health Departments. Assists the Laboratory with reporting infectious/communicable diseases identified in hospitalized patients as required by the GA Department of Human Resources within specified timeframes and assists with follow-up as indicated.
Develops and reviews policies and procedures.
Researches, develops and implements infection prevention policies and procedures.
Reviews and makes recommendations regarding new policies and procedures related to Infection Prevention submitted from all departments.
Revises hospital infection control indicators yearly based on risk assessment for the facility.
At least annually updates the Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure Control, Infection Prevention, and TB Plan with the respective infection prevention/control risk assessment.

RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure
with current licensure in the State of Georgia OR post-secondary degree from an accredited academic facility
