About us: **[The Water and Sewer Pipe Maintenance division is located at 1103 Mebane Street in Burlington. The Water and Sewer Pipe Maintenance division was established in 1907 to maintain the city water system. The system presently serves approximately 30,000 Water and Sewer accounts through a distribution system containing over 2,500,000 feet of pipe and a collection system which has over 2,000,000 feet of pipe.
What you will do: This employee performs routine equipment operation and maintenance tasks to ensure City structures, facilities, and grounds are safe, functional, and aesthetically pleasing for residents. Responsibilities include operating various motorized equipment, such as pickup trucks, trailers, tractors, mowers, loaders, forklifts, backhoes, and dump trucks. Tasks involve landscaping, digging, equipment upkeep, truck driving, loading and unloading pipes, resurfacing street cuts, ditch maintenance, and more. The employee works independently while traveling between job sites and completing tasks at each location. Supervision is provided by a mid-level supervisor or Division head in the assigned Department. ]{#isPasted}**
Examples of Duties
- Landscaping and Grounds Maintenance:Uses mowing equipment and weed eaters to keep City facilities neat and well-maintained.
- Supply Handling and Equipment Operation:Loads and unloads supply trucks for crews, operating equipment like loaders, forklifts, and backhoes to manage deliveries to the supply yard.
- Transport and Materials Management:Hauls asphalt, stone, and muck to and from worksites with a dump truck, ensuring smooth material transport.
- Street Maintenance and Equipment Operation:Operates asphalt rollers, gasoline-powered tampers, street sweepers, air compressors, and other street maintenance equipment to keep streets in optimal condition.
- Facility Cleanup and Waste Management:Performs general cleanup of City facilities, including emptying garbage, picking up litter, and discarding yard waste.
- Equipment Maintenance and Care:Informs the supervisor of any equipment repair needs and cleans heavy equipment as scheduled or required.
- Additional Responsibilities:Performs other related duties as needed, contributing to the overall efficiency of the team.
Qualifications
Mechanical and Automotive Knowledge:In-depth knowledge of automotive and mechanical equipment operation, as well as the general maintenance work typically performed by a municipality.
Heavy Equipment Proficiency:Skilled in operating a variety of equipment, including backhoes, forklifts, loaders, mowers, tractors, dump trucks, leaf blowers, weed eaters, tampers, jackhammers, and other essential maintenance tools.
Groundskeeping and Landscaping Expertise:Capable of applying grass seed and straw, fertilizing, mowing grass, shoveling, raking, and setting up proper signage to indicate active work zones.
Instruction and Supervision Compliance:Able to efficiently receive and carry out instructions from a supervisor, ensuring tasks are completed to satisfaction.
Maintenance Awareness and Reporting:Proficient at identifying and reporting maintenance needs for various structures, grounds, and facilities, ensuring timely and effective care.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School or GED equivalency and 6 months of work experience as an equipment operator, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirements
- Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or ability to obtain a commercial driver's lice se within six (6) months from date of hire
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior municipal wastewater treatment plantequipment operator work experience.

- The worker is required to have the visual acuity to be the operator of trucks, forklifts, cranes, and other equipment.
- Employee is subject to hazards, including mechanical equipment and atmospheric conditions due to exposure to fumes, odors, and dusts.
- This employee may work in close quarters, crawl space, shafts, manholes, small enclosures, small sewage and water line pipes, and other areas which could case claustrophobia.
- Working conditions include both inside and outside environmental conditions.
