Your New Role…
Climate change and extreme weather is a story that touches all of CNN’s audience and all beats: international and national news, politics, business, health and wellness, travel, science and beyond. The Extreme Weather Editor will build on the success of the CNN Climate & Weather team's important, high-interest coverage, prioritizing breaking news while also searching for discrete stories that help illuminate and personalize the climate crisis.
The ideal candidate is an experienced editor, preferably in the extreme weather and climate space. This person thrives on the breakneck pace of deadline journalism and has strong news judgment and reporting skills. This person is also comfortable working with meteorologists, writers, reporters and correspondents around the newsroom to manage daily coverage and shape distinctive stories. Finally, the successful candidate is a team-oriented collaborator who works well with and elevates their colleagues on the team and across the company.
*This is a benefits-eligible 6 month project role*
Your Role Accountabilities…
Identify and build a coverage plan around the weather story of the day, whether it’s a hurricane making landfall, an expansion of the drought in the West or a new visual that will fascinate the CNN audience.
Assign, edit and occasionally write stories in the breaking news space — urgent, rapidly updating digital coverage of hurricanes, tornado outbreaks, severe ice storms, life-threatening floods and more.
Assign and edit daily and longform stories from reporters, correspondents and meteorologists
Work with reporters to ensure the stories, newsletters and social media posts we publish are accurate and fair
Work with visual editors to enhance our digital stories and help our audiences understand the impact of extreme weather and climate change through data-rich graphics, photos and video.
Edit in formats that go beyond the traditional article, including real-time breaking news, video scripts, social media posts, TV package scripts, visual projects and explanatory journalism that helps audiences understand the news.
Assist the other climate editors on daily and distinctive stories about the impact of the climate crisis and the race to transition from fossil fuel to renewable energy.
Qualifications & Experience…
At least 5 years of digital editorial experience, including fast-moving breaking news, in extreme weather, climate or a related space
Ability and willingness to work outside the regular business day during major weather events
A clear understanding of style and grammar
A college degree or equivalent
A degree in meteorology, climate science or a related science field
Ability to be flexible with working hours based on the needs of the newsroom
How We Get Things Done…
This last bit is probably the most important! Here at WBD, our guiding principles are the core values by which we operate and are central to how we get things done. You can find them at www.wbd.com/guiding-principles/ along with some insights from the team on what they mean and how they show up in their day to day.
