WORK OBJECTIVE: This position involves the preparation, performance and completion of any type of assigned work normally done in the Communications Department at any location connected with the operation of the company's rail system.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification. It is not necessarily descriptive of any one position in the class. The omission of an essential function does not preclude management from assigning duties not listed herein if such duties are a logical assignment to the position. • Must be willing to work with minimum supervision and have the ability to perform the assignments given to him/her by the Communications Leader or Supervisor. • Must also fully understand the basic principles, methods and procedures applicable to the maintenance and repair of: two-way radio, CCTV, Computerized Telephone Switching System, Public-Address Equipment, T-Carrier, Fire and Intrusion Alarm, Real Time Computer Control and Monitoring Systems, Cable TV Systems, Power Supplies and Batteries and Cable Plant systems. • Must be able to understand and be proficient in the use of complex test equipment, including but not limited to Oscilloscopes, Digital Multi-Meters, Frequency Meters, and Deviation Meters, Digital Probes, Semiconductor and logic test devices. • Perform other duties and tasks as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES: Must be able to demonstrate a high level of skill in reading cable diagrams, wiring diagrams, logic circuits, and schematics. Must be able to express ideas effectively, both orally and in writing.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must have two years of formal training in advanced electrical/electronic theory, including digital logic, analog integrated circuitry, and CRT circuitry, and two years’ experience in the maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of modern communications systems. To be an eligible candidate for the position, all candidates will be required to pass the Skills Test designated for the position. Employee must be able to possess and maintain a valid New York State Driver’s License of the classification required by law for the type of vehicle (s) driven as part of an employee’s normal job duties. Must be able to wear and utilize all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Participation in the bloodborne pathogen program is required.
ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS: 60% of time is spent inside, 40% of time is spent outside, exposing employee to natural environmental conditions. Work exposes employees to fumes, dust, gases, odors and mist. Employee is also exposed to noise, vibration, hazards (slip and fall, chemicals) and motorized vehicles. To be an eligible candidate for the position, persons who were not full-time Metro employees on or before December 16, 1996 will be required to pass the Advanced Comprehensive Skills Test selected for the position.
