POSITION: Bus Aide – Non-Competitive
STARTING SALARY: $16.75 to $18.85 per hour

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
A Bus Aide is responsible for assisting the School Bus Driver in maintaining order on the bus, overseeing the loading and unloading of all student passengers and ministering to their needs until the bus reaches its destination. They are the first person to step off the bus, at every stop, to ensure traffic conditions allow the student passengers are aware of and obey the rules and regulations as set forth by the Board of Education, while riding the bus. The Bus Aide must be able to get along well with students and command their respect. Direct supervision is received from the Bus Aide Team Leader and Supervisor of Bus Aides. Supervision is exercised over the conduct of student passengers.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Checks and accounts for all student passengers and maintains order on the school bus;
Makes certain students are seated promptly after boarding the bus and remain seated until the bus reaches its destination;
Seats and places students in order to control behavior;
Assists students in wheelchairs and applies safety and restraining devices as needed;
Assists students on and off the bus in order to prevent accidents or injury and to guide them to cross the street safely;
Monitors student behavior on the bus and alerts the bus driver and/or transportation supervisor of problems that occur on the bus and at student stops;
Maintains a daily log of problems encountered and actions taken;
Delivers incident log and makes oral and/or written reports to the bus driver and supervisors at the conclusion of the work day;
May be required to operate the bus radio in the case of emergency;
May be required to administer first-aid;
Attends job-training workshops, meetings and conferences scheduled by the school principals or transportation supervisor;
Performs related duties as required.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good general intelligence;
Good knowledge of the geography of the city;
Familiarity with various bus routes in the district and stopping places for students;
Ability to get along well with students and command their respect;
Ability to establish good relationships with parents, teachers, principals, etc.;
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing;
Ability to learn and administer first-aid;
Good vision and hearing; mental alertness; dependability; neat appearance;
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- are no minimum qualification for this position. Incumbents must pass a medical examination prior to appointment and demonstrate the ability to perform the duties of the position.
NOTE:
Applicant must be City of Buffalo resident
Applicant must be 19 years of age at time of appointment
APPOINTMENT: Appointments are subject to the approval of the Board of Education upon the recommendation of the Superintendent following the approval of the Civil Service Division.
