Description

The Texas A&M University School of Medicine seeks to fill a full-time position for Department Head of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences (MPSY). This is a full time, 11-month appointment with an anticipated start date in the fall of 2024 . Applications will be accepted at the rank of Clinical Professor (Academic Professional Track- Non Tenure) or Tenured Professor, commensurate with qualifications. The position will serve as the chief administrative officer of the department, reporting to the Dean of the School of Medicine and will be based in Bryan-College Station.

As a key leader at the school, the department head will provide exemplary leadership to a department that is committed to excellence in clinical care, education, and research. In addition to the administrative responsibilities described, the department head will actively participate in sponsored research and/or the delivery of clinical care.

The Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences department head will build on the department’s successes and further develop and execute a growth strategy that leverages the talents of our faculty and staff. The position includes clinical and/or research duties in addition to the administrative and academic roles and responsibilities necessary to advance the mission of the department and school. The department head is responsible for the development and supervision of faculty and staff and for the oversight, planning, and administration of the department’s operations and budget. The department head conducts annual evaluations of faculty and makes recommendations on faculty appointments, reappointments, promotions, changes in faculty status, conferral of tenure, approval and renewal of faculty leave, and dismissals. The position also provides leadership and support for a broad range of initiatives, which include:

  1. Establishing and growing psychiatric and psychological care initiatives in collaboration with Texas A&M Health, Texas A&M University, and its numerous clinical partners

  2. Engaging in strategic planning for the department, including the further development of extramurally funded research programs that align with the areas of emphasis of the school, Texas A&M Health, and Texas A&M University

  3. In collaboration with the Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education, interfacing with new and established psychiatry GME programs and sponsoring institutions affiliated with the school to build and strengthen relationships

  4. Supporting and promoting the participation of the department’s faculty in the medical education programs of the school

  5. Expanding the school’s psychiatric and psychological care service line into new markets while utilizing the latest innovative care delivery modalities

    Qualifications

Required:

  • MD, MD/PhD, DO or equivalent professional degree

  • Board certification in their clinical specialty

    Preferred:

  • Clinical Experience

    o Five or more years of clinical patient care experience: Proven track record in providing psychiatric care.

  • Teaching and Educational Experience:

    o Five or more years of teaching, developing, evaluating, or leading educational programs: Experience in undergraduate or graduate medical education.

  • Research and Scholarly Activities

    o Active Research Interests: Experience in research activities from personal research record and/or encouraging faculty engagement in scholarly activities and securing research funding.

    o Program-building capabilities: Demonstrated ability to lead the expansion of departmental research programs.

  • Leadership and Strategic Vision

    o Visionary Leadership: The expertise that demonstrates the ability to develop and implement a strategic vision for the department.

    o Collaborative and Inclusive Environment: Fostering innovation and excellence.

    o Management of ACGME-Accredited Programs: Overseeing residency and fellowship programs.
